There wan a committee appointed
to look into the contraband
room, connoting of Haselden and
Robinson. They went right into
things. Their summary made nine
pages and there were several hundred
pages of affidavits bearing
out the summary of the commit
tee. The meat of the report
against Douthit is, it seems from
the testimony, that under instruc
tions from Commissioner Douthit
one firm's labels were ordered to
be placed on another firm's whis
key, and that high grade labels
have been placed on lower brands
of goods.
In this connection Superintendent
Bryant testifies: "Yes, 1 put
up whiskey in bottles with one
firm's whiskey with auother
firm's labels, but it was under in
structiona from Commissioner .
Douthit."
He further testifies that Lana
ban's labels were placed on the
goods of the Wilson Distilling
company.
Gantteays: "Yes; whiskey is
bottled with one firm's label and
with another firm's whiskey. I
have never known him to put a
label on whiskey where the liquor
called for by tbe label was cheaper
than the whiskey actually in
tbe bottles. We put out one X
corn whiskey with labels of
XXX."
King testifies that whiskey was
put up last Saturday and the

wealthy, and one of the society
leaders of the city. Her sister
three years ago, who was then
Mrs. Bugher, and very wealthy,
married Capt. Nicoll Ludlow, of
the navy. It was at one time said

Mrs. Bugher was not only rieh,
but very attractive personally.
Uapt. Ludlow was an officer of
striking apperrance, and like Admiral
Dewey, a widower.
During his residence here the
Admiral was closely identified
with the exclusive circles of society,
hut not until after the battle
of Manilla Bay were rumors started
that tie might marry again.
The Admiral has been a widower
now for twenty years.
As Admiral of the navy Dewey
holds a position scarcely second
to any except the President. It
is one, too, of leisure and assured
service always in Washington,
with but little more to do than
make an annual report to the
Secretary. At least that is all
Admiral Porter did. With a fine
house presented to him by the
people of the country, and a salary
approaching $15,000, Admiral
Dewey may be regarded as
a ucatch," and a man that perhaps
few widows, no matter how
eligible, would decline. He is
not quite 62 years of age, fine
looking, vigorous and accustomed
to polite society.
It is quite certain the Admiral
will not be let alone by matchmakers

he is either married or society
