Washington, Sept. 10?The 1 1 i' . . ?r yeiiow iever siruannn at ivev West is regarded as grave. Since the first case was reported, about three weeks ago, the epidemic has been steadily growing: until today there are almost 400 cases New cases are appearing at the rate of thirty a day, but the tnor tality is low. Fifty lour cases and two deaths were reported for Sunday and Monday. Attendant Hall, one of the Marine hospital staff, developed the disease last night and he has been isolated. As Key West is situated below the frost line the epidemic will have to run its course. The marine hospital service lias been directing its efforts t( confining the epidemic to flit island, and has been rewarded with signal success. Only one, infected, is known to have escaped and he was discovered at Miami and isolated. Me has since re covered. All the Rusp*ef* at Tori Tampa were placed in h del en'ion camp and Assistant Surg'-mi Trotter to day reported that, the camp would be closed on Wednesday as all suspects had been under observation ten days. None but known immunes are allowed to leave Key West, diroc.t, and then only on certificates. O'hers who /I /\ 1 'I - * 1 1 ' - ucsuu to icave uiusi nrsl ^(i 10 I lie detention camp at Dry Tortugas. The treatment of the cases in Key West is entirely under the super vision of the Florida State hoard of health. The marine hospital service is simply enforcing quarantine regulations, with a view to preventing the spread ol the dis ease. One new case ol fever was re ported to the surgeon genera' from New Orleans to day. The same report stated that freight from New Orleans was 1111 disputed except in Texas, which would not permit freigti' origina ting in New Orleans to pass t hroiigh t he St ate. The proclamation is t officially endorsed by the secre- ] tray of the State board of health, ' and it is thought that it will have the effect of causing a removal of the lines. The Porter fever case was reported nineteen days ago, J and no new cases have since ap- i pen red, although the limit of ex- ( posure is usually considered by the physicians as leu days.
