The present Act passed by the General Assembly authorizing the distribution of dispensary profits is disappointing, and should be changed. To divide up the dispensary prollts for school purposes according to this Act would make an unequal division. Some of the counties would receive more money than the profits of their respective dis pensaries would amount to. For infitnnr?? I ,f?vincrtr?n tinnnfv will receive about $1,210.40 from the dispensary fund to supplement the alleged deficiencies in her school fund. The dispensary at Lexington makes for the State about $^00 net. It will therefore get $910.40 more than was made for the State by its dispensary. The white people of all nations who are settling in Africa object to the negro being returned to his home in that country. It seems as if there is no place oi earth where the negro can find a wel come except in New England. We suggest that they all go there and that the United States then allow that part of the country to secede from the Union. But really it is hard that the usurpers in Africa should object to the negro returning to his own company, lie did not leave it. of his own ac cord and these same Dutch, Eng- I lish and New England people were the ones who seduced him away from his own company and sold him into the slavery over which they had so many fights in a later generation.? Florence Daily Times. The purchase of timber lands in this state by northern and western capitalists has become a serious matter, and within a few years those who are now sell ing their timber will realize that they have practically given awav the timber and thrown in the land. The contract, that the owners of timber lands sign ^Phen they sell the timber is on its face the most iniquitous swindle ever devised, and it is dillicult to understand how anv SJIOO man /.on he induced to sel 1 Id* timber on such terms. The contract gives the purchaser of the timber a perpetual lease on the land and the landowner is hound hand and foot. lie must pay taxes on the land, he cannot clear an acre it lie wishes to increase his planting acreage, nor can he sell the land unless the purchaser agrees to carry out the contract with the lumber men It would he tar better for the landowner to sell the land outright than to sell the timber under the contract drawn up by the lumber men, for in that case he would get rid of the land and would not have the taxes to pay indefinitely.?Sumter Watchman and Southron. NEGROES MASSACRED ? WAY UP IN ILLINOIS. * t SEVEN SHOT TO DEATH ON ' STREETS OP CARTERS c VILLE. c Troops Rushed to the Scene. d I Cartersville, III., Sept. 17.? j Oartersville was the scene of a |. bloody riot about noon to day, in which six negroes were killed and ' one fatally wonnded, while two 1 others received slight wounds. 1 Trouble has been brewing since F the militia was recalled by Gov. d Tanner last Monday. The white c miners of this place have refused \ to allow the negro miners to s come into town, always meeting ^ them and ordering them back. To-day, however, 13 nearoes, all armed, marched into town, going { to the Illinois Central depot, ^ where thev exchanged a tew words with the white miners 0 mere, men tne negroes pulled *their pistols and opened tire on * the whites, who at once returned r the fire. A running fight was a kept up. The negroes scattered, s some being closely followed by 1 the whites up the main street, v while the remainder lied down the railroad track. Ilere the execution was done, all who went a through town escaping. After the [fight was over six dead bodies r were picked up and another mor- 11 tally wounded. They were taken to the city hall, where the wound- ' ed man was attended to an in o que-t held over the dead ones. t The affair is really an outcome 1 of the trouble arising out of the 0 procurement of negroes to work v in place of striking white miners. Springfield, 111.,Sept. 17.?(iov. Tanner has ordered two compan ^ ies of the Fourth regiment, under command ot Col. Bennett, to Cartersville. lie received a telegram a this afternoon from Samuel 1 Brush, manager of the St. Louis 1 and Big Muddy Coal company, at o Cart?rsville, that some of his ne gro miners, who had gathered at e a depot, preparatory to leaving, ( had been killed, a mob having ^ fired upon them. t The governor gave out the fol- ^ lowing statement to-night: ^ "I received a message from Capt. Brush stating that the mobj ^ had attacked and killed the negro | miners while waiting at the llli j ( nois Central depot for a train; L that tlie sheriir would be unable I 1 to control the situation and was powerless to arrest the parties, f asking me to order troops to Car | tersvi lie. "In response to this message, ? knowing something of the condi- I ] tion of that place, and without i I waiting to hear from the sheriff j | ' or others in authority, I immedi < 1 atelv or.bt?'.| bieut. "I also ordered ("apt. lleisch 1 of Newton to proceed with his 1 i .... company by the quickest route to ] Cartersville. At the same time I ordered Col. Bennett of the ; 'Fourth regiment, who Iivor at < 1 Greenville, to proceed to Cartersvillo at once and take charge of the troops. 1 also directed the commanding ollicer of Co. F. of < Mount Vernon, to prepare and i he in readiness to leave on short notice. "Later. I received a message from Capt. Brush stating that later reports showed that seven of 1 lis men were killed and two innred, and that a ktge armed nob of men was between Carters'ill* and his mine, and that one ompany was not sufficient. "It would seem that these legro miners were waiting at the lepot for the train, probably exacting to leave the place tern>orarily or finally. It seems to >e, from the brief facts above re>orted and the further fact that 10 one was killed except the legroes, that it was prearranged, >reconcerted, premeditated mur ler. If I am right in this contusion, the people of Cartersille, and especially of Williamon county, should use everymeans >ossible, and that vigorously, to ring these guilty parties of this wholesale murder to speedy jusice, and in their efforts to do so promise them the cooperation f the State, the whole national uard, if necessary, to bring about he arrest and conviction of those arties for the restoration of peace nd good order in the countv. ?nd o I advised tho sherifF of Wiliamson county this afternoon by rire. "This is a blot on the fair name f the commonwealth of Illinois, nd will be a disgrace to the comaunity of Williamson county inless quick and vigorous action =s taken by the county authorities 'he good and law abiding citizens f Williamson county should rise o the situation and support the aw ollicers in restoring peace and rder and in the arrest and con iction of the guilty parties. "I hope that the Newton com mn v will rodz-li 1? m. ..... .v.i.v... uiiiiciviim uuore morning and before any con lict occurs ; but I do not believe nd shall not believe until it haptens that the strikers will attack he national guard, or attempt to ppose it in doing its duty." Late tonight Gov. Tanner re eived a telegram from Sheriff iray at Carterville, stating that he situation is critical and that he military company is not suf icient to disperse the mob. Gov. Court, when they will be tried on the charge ot criminal negligence. From evidence pro luced, it seems that they have been 111 the habit of going ofF at night, each leaving her child locked in the house without proper protection, and alono, until they returned. Thursday night they went ofT, and upon returning found the house in ashes and the two children, aged 5 and 3 years, respective!v. burned to ? crisp. I want to give a short account of the origin of that camp ground. A staunch friend ol the colored people, the late Irvin Clinton, let them have five acres of land on which the camp was located 32 years ago. I urged its per petuation seeing an order sent by Moses to Pharoh, "Let my people go that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness and sacrifice unto the Lord our Clod." Pharoah thought it not necessary. What was the result? lie went by way ot the Red sea to hell. We cant think Uod would send an unnecessary order, and if that order was necessary then, it is necessary now. I presided over that camp meeting for 25 years. During that time white people, men and women, attended. I have ordered the tent holders to see that the whites get dinner. Ilun dreds of whites will testify that they have been kindly treated at that camp. 1 would have been present had I been well. I're siding elder J. II. Jackson has been in charge since I was made| Bir-hop, a man that you may j count on for right at all times. Hundreds of people have been converted at this camp and numbers of them are now singing the praise of God on harps of gold in | that heavenly city where sickness and sorrow, and pain and death are felt no more. God save the church. 1. C Clinton. Compliments Always Dear. Age may bring wrinkles and snowy hair, but it never burns out the love of compliments and pretty speeches in the heart of a woman. I!' men would only remember that women grow beautiful and sweet of character when told that they are beau and Rweet of character, the world wouldn't know half the shrews and frettern and scolds who keep things stirred up as if with a soup ladle. I know a woman who must be GO yeas old if she's a day, but. is a pretty eompliment lost on her? Not a bit of it. She has been living on them all her life, aud for that very reason will be young and fresh when another woman would be faded and old.
