I inaugurated a movement for a . i 1 convention >! the v. heat growers' in South Carolina, which is al-! ready receiving wide endorse- L ment. The following >s from i Mr. N. A. Craig, president, of the L Craig milling company : Editor Journal: I desire to commend the efforts which you L are making to have the farmers! hold a wheat growers' convention at some point in the State. Of course I should prefer having it at G roe n wood, but I am ready to forward efforts to have it at anv 1 other place. I think it would be . best, to have it not later than .the . latter part of August so as to give the farmers time to consider the matters discussed and make their j preparations for s wing large crops of wheat. 1 .?m sure that L if wheat culture shall receive I one-half the attention now given to cotton they would make large ( rrnno nf ^ ^ ? nuDm, a mi uuu it more ^ profitable. All that is needed is j a waking up of the farmers of the State. The advantage will be two-fold. Not only will great j help come from raising the wheat ^ but it will diminish the cotton acreage and in this way enable ( farmers to receive a better price for their cotton. I wish to add my hearty endorsement to all that you have written on the subject and to say ^ that I stand ready to do all that 1 can to further the interests of the convention. 1 have already made some efforts in this direc tion. It cannot fail to uo gooa ii the farmers <*au he led to appreciate its v iluo. Western mills and farmers, with a goodly per cent, left in the hands of the home merchants. 1 use York County as an illustration because of my familiarity 8 recognized as one of ihe leadng wheat producing counties of ,he South, and of course there are icores of farmers within its sounds who are thoroughly post id as to what methods are neceslary to pursue to obtain the best results. I am not personally ac juainted with a single farmer in ihe county named, and only know tome of them by reputat on, but 1 suggest that the wheat growers' convention should invito?with a guarantee of expenses?not less than two or three of the best Farmers in Catawba county to 'ttend the convention and tell the members "how to do it."
