The Inarita was at t iv\?id tluaied t?y a private w tei king concern, hut was lost off Cat Island while being towed to Norfois. The petition demanding: tlie prize money was written by Capt. Chadwick, Admiral Sampson's especial protege. It is approved J officially by Admiral Sampson. The friends of the admiral seek to excuse his remarkable action in claiming prize money for the ships bv saying that it is actuated entirely by hia friendly interest in the men of his ship, who would, of course, get a portion of the prize money. However, as Admiral Sampson himself would get one fifth of the money, while the rest would be divided among all the other officers and men of the whole fleet, it savors rather i^l tt'hal aiu?o oIi Ia/I ? *t ?. v* t. v,*> y iru |JIIH till WHO py. at ,r) per cent," except tiiat in Admiral Sampson's case it is 20 per cent The officials of the navy department are chagrined at Admiral Sampson's ingenuity. He (irst filed his claim for bounty lor destroying the Spanish ffeet, claiming that inasmuch as he was within signalling distance of the American lleot. he was entitled in a share Tiiis claim could not well he disputed. llut there is a vast difference between bounty and the prize money which he t p'.v .emam's. .Bounty is the re war 1 paid li\ a government to its sailors who destroy or sink a ship. 1'rize money is paid for ships which are capMircd and miult: prizes, the money paid to the . 11?11??-? i?vui^ I'uni oni 01 i lie proceeds of ilio sale ol the slii|> by lho government. But to claim prize iponey for her after she was rtlised by tlie gov ernment is a decree of legal ingenuity which has excelled the wonder, but by no means the approval of the navy department. The same is in a measure true of the Infanta. She was put out of the fight by the American fleet, and. therefore, bounty is justly due the fleet, though Admiral Sampson's claims for a share of the money is a question of good taste. But to demand that she be considered a legal prize because she was raised and towed part of the way home is a refinement of reasoning which is believed to be based principally on the knowledge that she is worth at least a million dollars, and that the ad mind's share of the prize money would amount to much more than his share of bounty. It is understood, moreover, at the navy denurtntunl tK?f ?? r?,i v.*iv UK uint IIIIO IICW IIKMII'V claim for prize money is not substituted for the original claim tor bounty* but is intended to be sup plemental. It is assumed, however, that if the prize money claim were allowed Admiral Sampson would abandon the claim for bounty. The navy department will carefully investigate the claim. The naval board of inspection has been ordered to appraise the value or the Reina Mercedes and of the Infanta. It is estimated on very good authority that Captain Chadwick's petition for ' prize money, after a careful investigation, be disallowed. DeWitt's Little Early Risers expel from the system all poisonous accumulations, regulates the stomach, bowels and liver, and purify the blood. They drie away disease, dissipate melancholy, and give health and vigor for the daily routine. Do not gripe or sicken. d-w-s Investing in Improvements. I have a good letter from an ohl reader of the P. F., B. Luther, Lamont, Mich. He has spent a long life on the faim trom which ho cleared the original timber. He says that it is his observation that some readers and instructors of the young agriculturists teach by word ami example a reckless expenditure for improve ments, etc., which 9 times out of 10 the young farmer cannot at ford. No doubt what one savs m:iv nnnonr tt> . ?. -..vr vs i a a' ; i o ni;mr times. There are many good tools and improvements that the put? lie need to be ot'ten reminded <?t, but each one should always u>e good judgment about buying, or going into any thing new. It one of the serious troubles that young men just starting have in encounter now. that they must have everything about as wed to do people have. A start ol that kind will usually run away with a young man who has little to he gin with. I believe a young man | can buy a farm to-day, in many i sections, and do as well as any one could in the same circumstanYon can't care dyspepsia by dieting. Eat good, wholesome food, and plenty of it.?Kodal Dyspepsia Cure digests food without aid from the stomach, and is made to Cure. d-w . t iTERF JULY 22, 1899. 1. ^BSOLUIT^LY 1 Makes the food more de ces 50 years aj;o, if he will live as simply and economically a* they did then. Don't misunder stand n:e. I want yon to have all you can of this wot Id's comforts, but j;o slow and wait until you can pay tor them, and not be cramped by the expenditure. You must fro in debt for your farm tci st^rt with, but be very slow about buying anything else ymi can possibly fret along without until the farm is paid for. Then iin prove little by little alonir the lines where improvements are most, needed first. You have something before you to work hard for then, and there is a fait chance lor success. I)n you re member how t lie writer saved all the urine in stable long before he could think ol building a cement floor? lie pounded down wet bint clay all over the floor and thei covered it with olf hoards ami put on plenty of straw. Before he could pay lor a manure spread er without missing the money he spread the manure as well as he could by hand and harrowed it One. You have be- 11 told in these columns how to make a good clod crusher out of 4x4 scantlings that need cost but a dollar or two, and it answers ijuue well 111 llie place of a roller. So in many ways one can do good work without spending much, until he can get a home paid for, and then let the com forts and conveniences come as fast as possible. 'J hen you can ride on your manure spreader, roller, etc., and take the work easier. Yon have earned the right to do it. T. I?. Tkrry.
