FILIPINOS FORTIFYING. Preparing to Resist to the Death Southern Islands . Victoria, B. C., June 29.?Advices from Hakodate state that Oapt. Sakichi, of the steamer Ho koku Maru, just returned from the Philippines reports that in the southern islands the young Filipinos are constructing fortifications against emergencies. Every port is garrisoned liv a thousand or oo of volunteers, whose weap j ons, however, are very crude, only j about 20 per cent, being armed1 with rifles. ( Remington). They j are, however, full of patriot in, and state that thev will noi yield to the Americans though the whole of the islands are destroyed The Ilokoku Maru was warmly welcomed hy the Filipinos, who consider the Japanese to be of a kindred race and hoped for assis tance from them.
