FILIPINOS FORTIFYING.
Preparing to Resist to the Death
Southern Islands
.
Victoria, B. C., June 29.?Advices
from Hakodate state that
Oapt. Sakichi, of the steamer Ho
koku Maru, just returned from
the Philippines reports that in the
southern islands the young Filipinos
are constructing fortifications
against emergencies. Every
port is garrisoned liv a thousand
or oo of volunteers, whose weap j
ons, however, are very crude, only j
about 20 per cent, being armed1
with rifles. ( Remington). They j
are, however, full of patriot in,
and state that thev will noi yield
to the Americans though the
whole of the islands are destroyed
The Ilokoku Maru was warmly
welcomed hy the Filipinos, who
consider the Japanese to be of a
kindred race and hoped for assis
tance from them.
The Filipinos wer prepared to'
pay for arms and amnnition and
said the Japanese vessels vidtinji
the islands could tak* return (^r
ros of hemp. Capt. Sackichi says
he only sojd tin? insure ats two
revolvers and the cooks knives.

well to walk into some of the
central offices or the handsome
state library and see what the
