The editor of the Oconee News is a member of the Legislature, and in a strong and vigorous editorial which appears elsewhere he discusses the causes of poverty and depression among farmers of the south, holding the lien law as primarily responsible fur the evils (lowing from the credit system built up under th\3 law . nearlv thirtv vpjirs a?>o Wm ar? in sympathy with this view of the situation, and verily believe that the lien law has proven a curse rather than a blessing, though it served a benificent purpose when farmers needed credit from the merchants, and the merchants needed the lien law for protection and to obtain credit themselves. But harm has resulted from the continuance of ihe system and long ago there should have been provision made for a gradual extinction of the methods which environ the cotton crop so completely. The chief difficulty in the v.ay of repealing the lien law ' has been the opposition of far-! mers in the Leg.stature, backed by the in II tie nee and assistance of lawyers who represent lien merchants a f home. The v.ist maj ?ritv of farmers! in our section are not using the) lien law to obtain credit at this! time, but they are acquiescing in 1 a condition that works against! them in the long run, because this! system helps to foster an over- j production of cotton by the ren-1 ters and tenants whose sole de- ! pendence for credit in thousands J of instances is the much abused j lien law. The withdrawal of this, credit should not be made sweep- j ing and absolute, nor should the law be repealed to take effect the! coming year. Any system that J has been used for a generation j becomes so ingrained with the people's interests that it is the part of wisdom to move slowly in its demolition,'and we are con-j fident that the Legislature hasj refused more than once to kill| the lien law because the ad- j vocates tor repeal were too im-| patient and aggressive in their I opposition. It will require several years to adjust the machinery I when the repeal is made, and the! opponents of the law should tlx I the date far ahead in order to accomplish this object. Our friend of the Oconee News rightfully contends that the cot-! ton farmer has enriched the mer-1 chant and hmlt up the towns, hut we fail to see where this enrich I ment of oihers has been a source! of wealth to the farmers. The j average land-owner in the South hasre-eived enough actual cash from his inonev cr<>p to make him rich sur^ enough. Out he has heen passing it out to others for cloth- ! ing. dry goods, groceries, canned goods, mules and Imrses, wagons,! buggies and carriages, sewing j machines and organs, lightning rods ami clocks, and a hundred! The prospect of the money crop was alluring and deceptive, and the farmer ha? gone from year to year with the hope that the receipts would exceed the expenditures, but alas, the large majority have found out to their sorrow that the money has vanished like tho golden picture in a dream. The farmers who have saved money are not those wedded to the idea that the cot ton alone can bring them money to spend for their own use, but that farming is like any other business, and it is the production of food crops for man and beast, coupled with economy and prudent management on the farm and in the household, that will add permanent and enduring wealth to a farming community. Cotton does not have any magic power to produce riches, but it has a fascination for the large majority of our farmers that holds them down to customs and habits which aro expensive and i llusionarv.
