The weather has turned considerably cooler. The past few days retniuded us quite forcibly that winter Is fast appreacbing. Farmers are now busily engaged harvesting their corn and the remainder of tha cotton which !s very little. This is the first year we ever remember of the crops being almost all picked In September. Crops are very'short in this section, both cotton and corn. The cotton crop especialiy is very poor; hiwever, the high price is certainly a source of great gratifica tion to us and will In all probability fully compensate for the loss in yield. We were highly gratified with the ad vice given the farmers by the editor in last weeks Isite Is regard to sowing more grain, etc. Now it the oppor tune time. Let us sow grain and en deavor to raise our own bog and hominy. The Upper Longtown school opened on the 1st inst. The school is under the efcient management of Miss Fan nie Lee Ford, of Mitford. The Republican orators and organi are streanously opposed to any quota. tion of Mr. Lincoln's statements and views by Democrats in the preseni political campaign. They have causE to object to the selections in mosl cases. Here is a pertinent expressior from as !ate as 1865: "I see in the near inture a crisis ap proaching that unnerves me and cause me to tremble for the safety of ml country. As a result of the war cor porations have been enthroned, and ai era of corruption in high places wil follow, and the money power of th< country will endeavor to prolong iti reign by working upon the prejudice' of the people, until all wealth is ag gregated in a few hands and the Re public is destroyed, I fee, at this mo ment more anxious for the safety o the country than ever beforo, even i the midst of war." It was a clear-sighted prophezy ant it has already been fulfilled for thi most part. The war was waged in thi interest of "the corporations," of thi time, and they were "enthroned," a the natural result of it before Mr Linooln died. He knew thoroughl: well the concerns and the class whereo he spoke. He had been in close tone and service with them throughout thi war. The 'corruption id high places was already well developed under hi ayes, and it was a safe predletion tha "an era" of it would follow. Tb "money power" had saved the natio1 for itself by its power in war, an would naturally claim its rewird an( endeavor to establish its reign for it further profit. How effective its "en deavor" has been is shown by the prac tical aggregation o the "wealth" o the whole country in the victoriou section and in its haude. The proces is a continuing one, as the lengthenini roll of the "corporations" in that ;ec tion, with their enormous and eve increasing capital and "power" plain lV shows. The "near tuture," wbich the Prophe saw in his last days, was even neare than he thought. Within two decade after his death the era of corruptie: was fully developed and it was placei the country wholly under tne contrc of the corporations. The, governmen is of their choosing and election elec tion, nd they have emplwyed it t wage a causeless and costly war t further prolong their reign and mul tiply their wealth. Whether the en< is to be indeed the "destruction of th Republic," as Mr. Lincoln felt an. feared, remaine to be seen-but it is : suggestive reflection, at least, that al the rest o. his prophecy has come trn to the letter.--News and Courier.
