TORNADOES. Folentifleally Accounted for, and Mome Remote Causes that produce Palu. ful Results Explained. The following synopsis of a lecture de. livered by Dr. Horace R. Hamilton be fore the New York Society for the promo tion of science, contains so much that is Mimely and important that it can be read Fwith both Interest and proft: There is probably no subject of modern times that has caueed and le causing great. .er attention than the origin of tornadoes. k8cientists have studied it for the benefit of .humanity; men have luvestigated it for the welfare of their families. It has been a vexed subject long considered, and through all this investuration the cyclone has swept across the land carrying destruction to scientists as well as to the tunocent dwell era in its track. One thing, however, Is certain; the cause of the cyclone must be sought far away from the whirling body of wind itself. Its results are powerful; its cause must also be powerful. ILt us therefore consider a few facts. First, the appearance of a cyclone is invariably preceded by dark spots upon the taco of the sun. These spots, indicating a dis turbed condition of the solar regions, niec essarily affect the atmosphere of our earth. An unusual generation of heat in one part of the atmosphere is certain to cause a par. tial vacuum in another portion. Air must rush in to fill this vacuum. Hence the Iha turbances-hence the cyclone. This theory finie additional confirmation in the fet that tornadoes come during the day andJ not at night. Tho dark spots upoa the ( surface of the sun, whatever they may be, seem to cause great commotion in the at mosphere of the world, and it is alnost certain that the extremely wet weather of 1 the present season can be accoinied for on i precisely this basis. Is it reasonable to < suppose tnat tile marvelous effect of the I sun upon vegetation and life in general I shall be less than upon the atmosphero I ilself through which its riays come? The t cause is remote, but the effect is here. t After describing some of the terrible ef- v fects of the cyclone, the speaker went on B to say: This rule finds Its application In nearly every departient of life. An operator is in San Francisco-the click of the instru ment mianipulated by his fingers, in New York. 'rho president mkes a slight stroke c ()f the pen in lils study at the White I I Louse, and the whole nation is aroused by . the act. An uneasiness and disgust with I everything in life, commonly called home. i abichines, Is relt, by iany people, when the 1 catiso is to be fouind in the distait houl i thousands of miles away. An uncertain I pain may be felt in the head. It is repeat. ed in other parts of the body. The appe. ' tite departs and all energy is gone. Is the cause necessarily to be iound in the head? The next diay the feching increases. There are added symptoans. They continue and heeonie more aggravated. The slight pains Im tle head increase to agaonies. The nau sea becomes chronic. The heart grows wregular, and the breathing uncertain. All these ellects have a definite cinse; aid. after years of deep experience upon this subject, J do not hesitate to say that tis cause is to be found In some derangement of the kidneys or fiver fNr away froin that )orlion of the body in which these efftects appear. But one may say, I have no pain wh .tever ia iiy kidneys o.r liver. Very trite, INeithier have we any evidence that theire is a tornladou on the surface of the sunt; but It is none the less certtain that the tornado is here, and it is none the less cer tain that these great organs of the bodly tare the cause of the trouble although there t may be no pain In their vicinity. I linow waereof I spea~uk, for 1 have paSssed through this very experience my. self. Nearly teni yeatrs ago, I was the pic Itire oif health, weaahinu: morre than 200 pounds, and as strong and healthy as any man I ever know. \Vhen I felt. the symp. tonia I have abo~ve diescribed, they caused meii annloyanice, not only by reausoni of their aiggravating nature, but because I never telt anuy pain herore. H AuIIING EvianonEN TREus.-We have looked in vain for some abandon mont of the custom, to be seen i so many places,of shearing dvergreen trees into unnatural shapes. Now, no one objects to a tree out here or there, if he majority are left to develop the nat Liral beauties nature gave them, But that any man in his senses should so boy with his plants as to have every tree %nd shrub cut into a sort of cauliflower bunch, is beyond our comprobensioni. Yet it Is no uncommon sight to see pla.. 3es of some acres in extent, with hun Ireds of trees and shrubs thereon all )lipped and out in a fushion, whioh oven ,he lovers of topiary art would laugh at ith good reason, because Utterly barren >f any expression whatever. There is perhaps more excuse for the itreet-tree trimmer than those who have he beautiful lawn specimens operated M. There is the good fooling that iumberless poor men want work in the vinter. and the cutting off of the street rees keep them employed. And then mr desire to set our fadt-growing trees hat will make shade quick, leads us to orget that there are often forest trees )f the largest size that soon grow tall to tive the shade desired, and then they ire out low in order to make them branch >ut again. The idea is good, perhaps, but it does not work. The tree grows raster than ever, and its last state is worse than the first. Most people who iave been tempted under this idea to mnt back the tops of the trees, have ound wh n. too late that the practice vas an erroneous one, and that the vbila tree had to go Sich trimmed res, whether of decidtions or evergreen re very subj ot, to injury from extremes >f frost and cold, and miuch more liable o d.seaso or the attacks of insects than muttimmed trees. It is much better to invo trees of slowor growth, which con nuao luw-headed to maturity than to itle with tros in the basking way. At tny rate we cannot see why lawn trees houhi be out as they ai e; and if any no can give any reason for the faith in his practice, we should like to hear row them. CHANGING HABiTs,-To go away from home and change home habits is not always the nicest thing to do, and when it is done, the process ought to be as gentle and gradual as possible. In the ease of children this is doubly necessa ry, because the need does not at once appear. The seashore almost 'always excites and invigorates a child so that we do not estimate the effect the change may have on him. He spends the day In the sun, undergoes the exertion of a surf bath, exchanges his simple lunch for a heavy dinner, and seems to pros per. Suddenly he has the headache, Is feverish and has to be nursed through some annoying illness, which he would have escaped if the change In nis hab its had been managed with a little dis cretion. This is, howeyer. even more true of women than of children, because they take less exercise. The heavy 1 o'clock dinner and the lopg nap in a hot, close room, give many a headache, and rob many a woman of the vigor she ought to have gained by her vacation. After Meals. Torture.
