'WeAball.aJI await Airthrez Virginia Politics, T1he election in Virginia this fall has been anticipated with general interest. The position taken by General Mahone in the Senate that spring, ,the diverse views seeming to .obtain among the Virginians as to his action, and the -manifest coalition between himi and the Radicals ii the Senate-all com. bilned to turn .the public eye upon the Old D~ominion, and steadily fix it there.. -Within the past ten days the situation has assumed a shape that makes Virginia politics more than ever itateresting to the country at large. There are now two ticikets in the field-the Democratic and the Read justers'.. Trhe chief, in fact, the only ,issue between the parties is the same that resulted 'iisending Mahonte to the Sente-thi nestiont of the Stal e debt. The Democraits have put out a strong ticket headed by Cnl. Daniel, one of the .brightest and ablest men i the State. TheJ Iteadijusters' ticket ib headed by Col. Cat7erWon, who is rep. sented as an antagoonist of wvhom the Democrats have need to bhe as mucil afraid as of anyone that their oppo. nents could put up. Hie is said to be a man oftgood intellect, fiue learning and etellenat working qualities. Hie .can do perhaps as miuch as ally othei man in keeping his party solid and ir whmaninig converts to its doctrines, The Iflepubiceans hiavo made no nomi. nautions, Their convention met in dme form, but it was soon) apparent that Maihone and~ .his followers had been at work to capturo the conicerni. There were t w pairties in the convention. the C'oaliuioniists and the Straightouts, the former being in tile majority Upon the en~dorsement of tile iteadijus. ter ticket by the former, the lattei withdrew and set up a meeting oftheht own. It was certainly expected that this body would put out a ticket, Gen. W. C. Wickham had been the recogniized loader of the Straightout fhtetion, and it was supposed that hi! bitter olposition, to Maho~ne would lead him to organize a strong move men~lt against him,. B"t he seems te have failed signally, 'Cot only diEl Mahione virtually capture the Rlepub. lican contvention, but the Straightoutt themnselvee acdjourned without making any ttominations, General Wickhan1 was proposed for governor, but he de. olined the nomination. Mr. 8. M. Yost, who had been equally industri. ons wth Wickham in getting up the Straightout movement, also declined the nothination for lieutenant-gorern or. An,. enthusiastic -negro delegate nominated George Wilson the colored chairman of the convention, but he wes beateh by a smalt' majority. This is ' ihe drt time that a negro has been rghda. Though the tepublicans filed to nake Bayaaplinario,.e, they 4sahwed with great unanimity that -they would held fat to the principles of thei',party and ignore al~l propoi tiers tVr the readjustment eC the 4obth .rheth'r 8tgtAer sational. Under all the circuin ' stances the result lfties elaation Is at best doubtfoLt. m The ratlive strength of the contend -in parties, with the.ehances that each f seems to have for success, is stated by a the News and Courter as:follows.: i The lepublican, party in Virgzinia, with Its 88000 voters, Is to he an up-, pendage.of.the 8Q,QOO Rleadjusters at the Novembervelection, so far as the. Republicans can be bound by the ae- I tion of the Lynchburg Cotrvention. At the election last year lie -vote of. the Funder Deniocrats was 96,449. Anything like a complete coalition of tie liepublicatis an sten(Uusters, oni the basis of the vote of 1880, will give iMuhone the victory by a decisive ma jority. Ilow far the coalitin will go; on election day, it is hard to surnise at this stage of the canvass. We con older it certain that many Readusters, *alirmed and disgusted at h' open : afiance with the lipubicans, will re turn to their fist love and vote for Daniel, ut at the lafst eJection inany Rea<usters voted for the Funder elec toral ticket, instead of their own, rath er thant run any risk of giving the State to the Republicans. The nor mal Readjuster strenti, therefore, probablv was considerable more thian 1,527. 'The Republicatn vote, after all,. is the most important factor. Wickhamn, Yost and others will absini Lfrom voting aid soimie fthw white RIe publicans-will vote for Daniel, but it. is tair to assume I hat the colored people in general will support Caieron. They are advised to do this hy [te He-| publican leaderq in the Norh'. and by such Cabiniet officers ds Wimdosm ind 1 James. The President and Secretnrv Blaine are, also, sul l> oscd to be il favor of coalition. U e these ci r cuinstances the Democracv must ex pect. to enlcounter, a pretty solid Be publican vote. They are prepared for this, no doubt; and will make a ring ing canivass. GRENVLLM OOSSIM. Who Normal Institute---The Exercises Pro. gresing Finely--The Capture of Red nwosd---MetatCwsoar's Head. They embrace German, by Profesqor Soldan ; French and Latin, by Dr. Joynes; Physical Georgraphy, by Mr. ero w; Calisthenics, by Miss Judson ; Penmanship, by Mr. Kyser, and Algebra, by the writer. These classes are wvell attended.
