Virginia Politics,
T1he election in Virginia this fall has
been anticipated with general interest.
The position taken by General Mahone
in the Senate that spring, ,the diverse
views seeming to .obtain among the
Virginians as to his action, and the
-manifest coalition between himi and
the Radicals ii the Senate-all com.
bilned to turn .the public eye upon the
Old D~ominion, and steadily fix it
there.. -Within the past ten days the
situation has assumed a shape that
makes Virginia politics more than ever
itateresting to the country at large.
There are now two ticikets in the
field-the Democratic and the Read
justers'.. Trhe chief, in fact, the only
,issue between the parties is the same
that resulted 'iisending Mahonte to
the Sente-thi nestiont of the Stal e
debt. The Democraits have put out a
strong ticket headed by Cnl. Daniel,
one of the .brightest and ablest men i
the State. TheJ Iteadijusters' ticket ib
headed by Col. Cat7erWon, who is rep.
sented as an antagoonist of wvhom the
Democrats have need to bhe as mucil

Besides the regular members, a numt

The intense heat is very exhausti ng,
and is the only cause militating against
a complete success. Notwithstanding
this the exercises are well attended,
and both the faculty and meiliers are
much in earnest. The optional courses
this year are a feature of ti e Institute.
They embrace German, by Profesqor
Soldan ; French and Latin, by Dr.
Joynes; Physical Georgraphy, by Mr.

Penmanship, by Mr. Kyser, and
Algebra, by the writer. These classes
are wvell attended. Music is quite a
feature, and under Mr. WVitherow 's
genial management and thorough int

be devoted to it. It would be impos

VFrom GEN. ID. 'KENNEDT, Lieutenant-Governor-of South Carolina.1
CAUDEK. 8, C,, Decemiber 11th, 1886.
As a patron of the Charlotte Female Institute it affords ne.poeasure to testily to the
thorough management of every department of it. This knowledge is derived from a
visit to and inspection of the institute. Strict-attention is paid -not only to the edu
cation but health and eoinfort of its pupils. Its homelike air impressed. me most
favorably. The Rev. Mir. Atkinson, with the aid of his able and accomplished corps
of assistants, presents every inducement to parents who have daughters to educate. I
shall contin-e to 1 atranize the school. J. D. KENNEDY.
[Froin Pnop. J. F. LATIhMEH, 'P. D., of Davidson Co'lge.]
I can testify to the success the Charlotte Female Institute has attained under the
direction of Mr. Atkinson, who ham in the three % ears that. he has been principal
raised this school to the highest place among our educational institutions le has
spared neither care nor expense in securing the services of the most aocomplished
an( experienced teachers, and in making .the institute a c mfortable and .pleasant
home.for its pupils. No patron has ever visited the achool without being more than
ever pleaked aith the arrangements for the welfare vi his daughters. From being
; r, sent at some of its examination and pt rsonally inspect.ug the work of the pupils
thereon. I know that the instruction is t horough and of a -ry high gnde. Dr.
Bidez, the Proft-esor of iusic, it. rtgarde.- by hir pupils, many of whon are 4amateur
lady musicians, graduates in music at other rjtil.utions, se the most Advanced and
alccomplished teacher of mouaicihat has ever como kouth. J. F. LATIMEit.
'S Yob begins September 7, 1081. Terms- $125.00 per half session,- including
