An official bulletin issued at midday Thursday says that during the pre ceding twenty-four hours the President had continued slowly to Improve. The fever increases at night ani diminishes in the morning. The President took morphliie, and eat oatmeal with relish. The wound is yellowish as is charac teristic of wounds of that kind,. but this symptom is not considered inpor tant. The physicians feel that the patient has done as well as could be , expoected, and hopes of his recovery are strengthened by events of the past two days. A dispatch at nine o'clock Thursday evening says the favorable condition of the President continues. Bulletins on Friday reported still futrther im proventont, and all parties are inuch encouraged. Conkling has written a letter of con dolence to Attorney-General MoVengh in which he says all discoad must be hushed in the shadow of this great calainity. The Attempted Assassination of Jackson, Guitean's crime recalls to mind the attempted assassination of President Jackson, which was averted only by the failure of the assassin's pistol to explode. The circumstances of that affair were about as follows: On the 80th of January, 1830, th fmineral ser vices of ion. Warren R. Davis, of South Carolina, were held in the Capitol, at Washington. They were attended by President Jackson. As he was leaving the Capitol with Secre tary Woodbury and others, just as he reached the portico, a young painter, Richard Lawrence, standinag in the crowd, produced a pistol from be *lneath the folds of hi cloak, and alin ing dlirectly ut the Presidenit's heart, wvithint two and a half' feet of himt, pulled the trigger. rThe pistol snap ed. anid quic~k as thought, he produced a second weapon and snappled it. also without effect. President Jacksont, raising his 'lnne, rushed upon Law rence with the ferocity of a tiger, ex claiminig, "Let me go, gentiemeni, I can defentd myself." Lawrence had al ready beet) knocked down and dr'ag ged out, anid was hurtled off' to thte prison.
