APLAA9T GATHERING, Celebrating the Soventy-Soventh El3Ithday of a WeU Known Citizen of Fairfield. Messrs. Editors: On yesterday, the eighth of 1ovember, a few old and well-chosen friends, and a portion of I the sous and daughters and grand- 1 children of Mr. Daniel Hall, assembled C by invitatlon, at is residence, near Gladden's Grove, Fairfield county, to t celebrate the seventy-seventh anniver- 3 sary of his birth. The day was bright t and beautiful, and the weather, though C cool, was pleasant and invigorating. A cordial welcome was extended to j the visitors, and, indeed, the doors of ] that handsome and hospitable mansion C are ever open to admit the deserving, 3 whether they 'como in the attire of0 wealth or wear the beggar's robe. Un- ] like the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Lov ick Pierce, upon which It was said f that none of his assembled children laughed, the party was a mei'ry and sociable one-the younger members shouting andi romping to their heart's content, up and -down the stairway,r through the hail, the different apart mnent s, and out into the piazzas.' I am sure that not a single reproof was ad ministered to the noisy rebels by the father and grandfather himself, nor by any of the inmates of his home. A banquet worthy of a king was served at the right time, and the excellent housekeeping of the lady of the man sion would require a whole chapter ofI commendation. Present at the dining were Mr. James McCrorey (aged sev enty-eight the previous dav), Mrs. James McCrorey, Mr. Chiarles Dong lass, Mrs. James Johnson, a son of the first wite, two sons of the second~ 3'vife, two-daughters-in-lawv and five grand children. Mr. Daniel Hall has five children iving, thirteen grandchildren and two great granidchildren. He has four children and one grandchilud at rest. In conlusion, a prayer is offered that this hale but venecrable gentleman may live inithe enjoyment'of health,I contentment and prosperity, to wit ness the hundredtli anniversary of his birth, and even longer, if it please1 God. May death come to him as gent ly as the leaves fall ini autumu, and may his eyes close upon the fading scenes of this wvor'ld to open upon the dzling heights of the mountains of Paradise. nAg si wih ecen eo us11o kisvisage,. LandLeg. From the New York Herald. DULN November 8.--The condi tion of Captain Boycott and his family has undergone not the elightest amelioration since hli oe a state men o hs csetoan Irish paper. In Itwl erecalled that about a month ag recess-server and his, escort re treatd on oug h Mask Hiouse, fol lowd b amob 'and that on the fol lowin dayall die farm servants wvere orderedtave Mir. Boycott's em ployment. Mr. Boycott is a Norfolk man, the son-of a clergyman and was formerly an officer in the Thirty-nlnth regiment. On his marriage be settled on the Island of Achill, near here, and .farmed there until lie was offered seime land agencies, which occupied so much * of his time that ho, after some twenty eas' residence ini Achilil, was electedj taea farm on the malu land. For1 seven years ho has farmed at Lotgh * Mask, acting also as. Lord Erne's agent. H~e hias, on his own accofnnt, hda few ,difflculies with his work peohple; biut these were tided over by concessins on his part, and all went smoothly till the serving of notices ,tupon Lord Er'ne's teinants. All the weight of the tenants' vengeance has fallen u pon' the' unfortunate an,1 whom the irritated p' ple declare they will "hunt out o the country4". The position is an extraordinary one. During his.per'iod of occupation, Mr. Boycott has laid out a great deal of . money on his farm, has impr~oved 'the rbada and made turnips and other rootI 1rops to grow, -wert. non3 grew be iore. But the Couantry sie haa struck )gaittst h1n, and he is 1ow aelutilly ill 1 state of selge. P'ersoially ATENDEDI UY AN AnM ED ESCOu', lic haq a arrisoi of ten coilstables on hi pronaes. somno established in a hut itud the rost in that part -ot Lough Mask House adjacent to the old cnstle. Garrisoned at home and escorted rbroad, Mr. Boycott and his family are noiw reduced to one femnale domestic. l0verybody elseo has gone away, pro testing sorrow, bit alleginig that the power brought to bear upon thom was 'reater thai they could resist. Farm laborers, workimen, herdsmen, stable mn-all wont long ago, leaving the .orn stan11din ug, the horses in the stable, thIe sIeep in the 1eld, the turlips, wedos, carrots and potatoes .in the ground. Even t(e laundress reftsed to wash for the family any longer; the laker at Ballinrobe Is att'aid to supply bhem with bread, aid the butcher lears o send thien ment. The state of siege A perflect. "IIUNTED OUT." When the strike first began, Mr. Boycott 'wont bravely to work with as family, setting tihe young ladies to caping and inding, and lookinar after .he beasts and sheep himself. lIut the itruggle is nearly at an end now. Mr. Boycott has sold some of his stock; mlit he cal neither sell his cr01) to anly )ody else, nor, as they say in the north )f England, "vin" it 'for himself. i'hero renains in the ground at least M500 worth of potatoes and other root :rops, and the owner has no possible nieanse of doing atything with them. 'or would any hmlani bueng buy i.hem Lt any price ; nor, if any sUch nurson vOre found, would lie be able t'o find my laborer to touch any manlier of vork on the spot under the ban. By mi iipalpable and invisible power it is lecreed that Mr. Boycott shall be 'hunted out," and it Is more than loubtfi whether h' will, under exist. fig circumstances, be able to stand Lgainst it. He is unquestionably a >rave and resolute main, but there is oo much reason to believe that with ut his garrison and escort his life vould not be worth an hour's pur hase. There are few fairer prospects han that from the 'Steps of Lough dask House, a moderately comforta lo and tupretending edifice, not quito ,8 good as a large farmer's homestead n England. BUT TIE POTATOLS WILL ROT 11 the ground and the cattle will go stray, for not a soul in the Ballinrobe ountry dar touch a spade for Mir. loycott. P'ersonally, lie is protected, ut no woman in Dallinrobo would reami of 'washiing hiini a cravat or aoking him a loaf. All the people ave to say is that they are sorry, but hat the "dare not.') Hence either Ir. Boycott, with an escort arimed to he teth, or his wife without all OF ort, for the people would not hiarm pr, mullst go to Ballinrobe after put mug a horse in the shafts themselves, uy what they can, and bi'ing it home. iverybody advises therin to leave the ountry, but the answer of lie be ieged agent is simply) this: "I can ardly desert Lord Erne, and, more Vel', Iy own property is sunk in this lace." It is very much like asking a an to give up work and go abroad )r the benefit of his health. le can ot sacrifico his occupation and his roperty.
