WIT AND HUMOR. TU BOY wIrH RED AIs.-RIllard Barry, a boy of fifteen, with led ears and a sulky look, wanted his widowed mother to anvance him thirty-live cents with which to organize a " Juvenile Pinafore "1 troupe. He had arranged for a rehearsal in a horse-barn, and the "parts " had been given out, but his mother's refusal to hand over the cash upset the plans. The heavy villain as saulted the leading lady with a club and then fled from home and got up a riot with the boys who were to play "juvenile man '' and " first old womlanl.1 " Riehard, the second net is now about to open,'' remarked his Honor, af ter hearing the testinony. You are not very heavy, bit the vidainy In you must be sul)pressed all the same." The boy's mother remarked that Richard was probably very sorry, and that lie probably wouldn't do so again, and Richard's ugly eyes were beginning to twinkle when his Honor said: "It will be at least thirty days before Richard will be himself again. lie looks to me like an ugly-tempered youth, and I don't believe lie has earned an honest dollar this winter. Address, Faculty of Invalid.' and Tourist.' ulttEfrali, N. V MORTALiTY AMoNG BIES.-From the severe and lon g-contlinued cold of the 0 past Winter. which confined the bees i to the hives and to one portion of the a hives, for long months together, and el from numerous reports, I am persuaded C that the past will add another to the C list of disastrous Winters experienced by American beekeepers; especially will those suffer who are careless and i ignorant, Those who did not extract the uncapped lioney last Autumn. and provide the requisite amount of good food. will suffer loss from dysentery in i their aplarles, which, if it has not kill- a ed the bees outright, may so have weak- n eued thein that only the best care cm restore them to health and vigor. Others gave the bees enough honey, but left it so scattered, each frame con taining only one or two pounds, that the bees, confined to one part of the hive by the cold, could not reach their ft stores and so starved. By thus neglect ing to concentrate the bees and honey, by tke of division boards, American aplarists have lost thousands of colonies of bees diiring the past Winter. If the B: bees, with suflIclent honey-thirty f| pounds-had been confined to a cublo ' foot of space, or had thers been a break in the severe cold, so that the cluster of bees could have broken and re-form- ., ed, the result would huve been different. sc Bees kept in a good collar, In chair hives, or well packed In straw or earth, havesull'ered least. Andsuchifgivei Is sfilIclent and proporly arranged stores, .'i are in flne condition. Wiat to do? P, Colonies suffering with dysentery, but still active, should receive clean hives fi and combs atonice. If stores are absent ul or inaccessible in any of the hives, T either feed or add combs contaluing C honey instanter. All colonies should re be confined to a limited por(ion of the " hive, by use of the division board. Strong colonies should have about 1700 cubic Inches; weak ones from half to two-thirds as much. In changing or handling the frames, caution is requir ed not to separate combs containing C broods. Great care should be taken to cover warmly with quilt and cushion during the cold (lays of Spring. Keep colonies either In tile cellar or paicked till flowers aid gatheiig are at hand, and do not remove the packing until the cold winds and nights of April are past. Feed s)aringly till gathering from flowers begins. Add empty combs as fast as they are reqired for brood. Those who have lost heavily nee not sorrow as those having no hope. With the comb and honey in the hives now tenantless, colonies can be built up with surprising rapiidity in May and June. With these combs to aid and a good season, careful apiarlsts can safely quadruple their stocks if little or no surplus honey is desired.
