A Washington correspondent gives these anecdotes of the late Senator John Morrissey : Two or three incidents connected with Mr. Morrissey's first official appearance in Washington are not unworthy of mention. The day after he arrived here to take his place in Congress he was seated in the barber's shop of Willard's Hotel, when "Beau Hickman," well known as "iho champion gentleman beat of America," approached him and said, "Mr. Morrissey, permit me, sir, to congratulate you upon your election to Congress, to a position, sir, which I have no doubt you will adorn." "That's not bad," replied Morrissoy, "but what does it cost ?" "Oh, only $5," replied Hickiii. . "That's cheap," said Morrissey, and then l'anded him the money Without another word. Shorty after he cane to the capital h4r. Morrissey learned that Colfax, ?ho was then the Speaker of the Hoise. was an inveterate smoker.. Acting upon this knoul - edge he went to-him and presenting, a neatly prepared parcel, said: "Mr.-6peaker, I want to talk to you' about my place on the committees, but bpfuole I say a word let me give you the best box of cigars in America.'"- -"Ah, yes," said Mr. Colfax, very '.much einb.rrassed, "but, you know-that is to s:y1 all the'in portant places belong by right to tWe old members." "Cer tainly," Lud Morrissey in his own blunt, hearty way, "euat's just wh.t I thought, ind what I want you to do for me is to put ie at the tail end of soie CL1mittee that never does any work." "Oh, that's easy fuough," said Colfax, evidently much iolioved ; "I'il do just w.at you want." lie kept his word, and Mr. Morrissoy was appointed to the Committee on ltevoittionary Pen sions, which meets about once in five years. Mor'rissoy, unlike most of his' associates, was not ambitious to figure prominently in the "2Con. gr'essional Diretory," and wvhen Major Ben Porley Poore, the com piler' of that wvork, called onl him for a short sketch of his life, and asked what his profession wVas, the newvly-olected Congressman said, with some1 bitterness., "WVoll, I suppose you had better put me down as a faro-dealer.'' "Oh, you don't mneanf it," said Major Ponore. "Can't you give me some other occupation C' "Yes, of coura.o I can," replied Morrissey. "Give~ mie credit for my old trade if you will ; call me an iron-mnoulder, for that's what I am if I'm anything." And he appears in the "Directory" as an iron moulder, lNotice to Taxpayers. There is a curious story about some native wines which are extensively advertised nowa days, and have only recently been put upon the market. Dr. Undcrhill, the well-known grape-grower of Croton Point, died in 187r. 'ome of his heirs entertained tempcrance views of such extreme kind, that they were unwilling to allow the stock cf wines then on hand to be sold or any more to be made. The grapes have sometimes been sent to market, and sometimes left to decay upon the tines. It is only now that the other heirs have succeeded in arranfing for a settlement of the estate and the sale of the wines on hand. Among these is a wine cf the s intage of 1864, described as a "Sweet Union I'ort,' but suggesong t:o Imperial Tokay more than any other l',uropean wine, and being wholly unlike any other wine of American growth. Its purity. age and ma"lowness are remark~able, and boath physicians and wine-. fanciers have a special intcrest in it as the oiuest native wine now accessible in nny con-. siderable quantity. T[he whole stock is'In the hiands of the wchl-known wvholesale g'rocery house of the Thurbers.-N. Y. Tribune, The above speak:s for Itself, but we would adid that this is thec pure juice of the grape, neither druge'd, //iquore'd nor wvatered; th at it has becen ripecned and mecllowved by age, and for medicinal or sacramental purposes It Is unsurpassed. it can be obtaincd from most of the leading Druggists throughout the United States, and at wholesale from the undersigr.'d, who will forward descriptive pamphlet, free of charge, on application.
