" ; NINETY-SEVENTI 4NNXIYF.A a OF TIE BIEGE OFINE1'Y-SXX r Proparations Making for a Grand Cole. bra,ion on the Eighteenth of the Present Month. r The citizens of Ninety-Six and its vicinity held a meeting a few days - ago, to make preparations for a pub f lie demonstration at the Old i Fort on the 18th of June. This i particular day has been selected be cause on the 18th of June, 1181y a General Greene, commanding the I Americans, made the assault upon - the fort held by the British. For seven teen days Greene had invested - the fort-Cruder, commanding- the > British, holding it with a pertinacity 1 characteristic of the British soldier. When almost on the point of sur 1 rendering the fort, Cruder received 3 information by Miss Emily Geiger, C who had a lover in the fort, that r Charleston to his relief. At the same time Greene heard of the epproach 3 of Rawdon, and determined upon au 1 assault. The 18th of June was the - clay selected. The assault was made with great courage by the 3 Amerieans, and resisted with des - I peration by those within the fort. t When victory was nearly ready to - alight upon Greene's banner, he 1 was forced to discontinue the siege 3 because of the near approach of 3 Rlawdlon. In a short tinie aftebu 3 w.trds the garrison was withdrAwn e and the fort abandoned by the S1ritish1, It is to commemorate this gallant i assault by a small band upon a thoroughly well manned and well c supplied fort that this meeting is called. Whilst it is not the centen 3 nial of that occasion, it will be the 3 anniversary ; and taken in connee I tion with the opening campaign, and the dosire which the people have 1 to hear those whom they love and 3 respect, and as a further celebration i of our recent delivery from bondage 1 into the lightof pure and good gov ernment, our people are determined 3 to celebate this brave fight.by our - forefathers in the cause of American , liberty.
