A locomxotive ran over a good deal of human experience near a freight depot in Kansas City on January 3. A 1witch engine with three baggage. cars was backing rapidly, when a man rushed from a side-crogsing and disappeared be neath the wheels ; and when the trafin had passed, the mangled and quivering body of Captain Kottwitz was found lying across tho rails in n pool f blood. He was an officer o, the Russian Imperial Guard during the Crimean war, and was wounded during an assault upon the Redan. He was sent home to his father's estate near Moscow, and enjoyed the pleasures of a young nobleman until he rejoined the Imperial Guard. His colonel was arrested for a political offence, and sentenced to the Siborian mines for life. The Captain and eleven officers con spired to effect the release of the colonel, but the plot was discovered and the ring-leaders were sentenced to death. On account of his high rank his sentence was commuted to service for life in a Cossack regi ment in Eastern Siberia. He es caped from the military prison at Moscow, made his way to the Black Sea, and passed into the Turkish dominions. He arrived in New York in 1863 and joined the Seventh Volunteer Regiment, serving until the close of the war. In 1870 he went to Rome and made an unsuc - cessful effort to secure a pardon from the Czar. The death of his grandmother cut off his annuity, but gave him $20,000, with which be returned to the United States and settled in Kansas. His fortune went to waste in a land speculation and he was thrown upon his own r esources, which finally failed to keep him out of debt. He spoke seven languages ; he was a graduate of Heidelberg ; and he had two un paid board bills in hia pocket when h a ahed out his brains. THE KEELEY~J MOTOR. 'lihe Keeley Motor is now admit ted, by the scientists who have been investigating it, to be a dis covery wvhich probably posseses a scientific value, but is practically worthless. Upwards of one million dollars have been spent on it, and yet the inventor can never p)redict the result of an attempt to start his engine in motion. It takes longer to generate the power than the lat ter will keep the machinery in mo - tion. The volume of thc. power can not be regulated, and its force at times wrecks all the machinery yet devised to control it. To utilize it a new form of engine must be do vised, and one of much nicer con., struction than even the finest of those now used in connection with N steam, the extre.ne subtlety of the-' K vapor requiring a closeness of joint ing far beyond anything yet accom plished in practical mechanism. Mr. Keeley claims to have invented such an engine, but, like the power that moves it, it seems to be impractical and valueless for any real work. This is the result of years of experi ment and costly effort to utilize his discovery as a mechanical powver. One-fourth of the original stock has been purchased by an Englishman for $125,000. Shares that have been quoted as high as $300 have been sold recently for from $15 to $25. Keoley may yet succeed in harnessing his new horse, but .he necessary capltal'will not be forth coming very freely after these years of failure. -Meantime, it may be that he has been forestalled by another inventor. Mr. William Wallwork , who died a few days ago at London, England, completed an invention just before his death, iylih he styled "a new power to supersede steam." Subsequently, the machine was tested, and, it is rpported, piaially~ justifies what the 4eetaded said it would do. Its power, he said, ,was unlimited, and 4. 6 blew off air at a pressure of forty pounds. Certifleates attesting its virtues have accumulated, and are con stantly being received, and as many of these cases are publicly known they furnish convincing evidence o the superiority of this Sarsa parilla over every other alterative me(dicine.
