There has ben litt!o notico given of it by the town council. A man who works for the public, generally receives but small thanks. He should at least have some just compensation for his tine and labor. The intendant shoul. be a s.lami d officor. Agricultural liens of all forms are kept constantly on hand at the office of THE NEws AND HIERALD, or sup plied at short notice. Satisfaction guaranteed in this line of work ,Prices as low as the low3st. This seotion was visited on Sun day afternoon with one of the hoviest rajis over known in this vicinity. The water-courses were much swollen, and a portion of Kincaid's Bridge, over Little River, was washed away. 1ir We invite the attention of per sons visiting the printing-offico of THE NEws AND HERALD to two notices posted conspicuously on the door xmd walls: 1. We trust the meeting this after-noon INill be well attended. It is highly important that. a strong ticket be -put out, and the surest way to accomplish this end is through a well atten~ded moetjjg of the tax 1payer.s. . On Monday af ternoon he complained of feeling unwell, and in a short time became paralysed, and died before day. Capt. Means was well known both in the county and beyond its limits. In his youth he served as midshipman in the United States navy, and dur mg the late war was a captain in the nevy of the Confederate States. The greater portion of his life, however, had been devoted to planting. He was highly esteemed as a gentleman and a Christian, and hi3 untimely death will be lamunted by nany frienids. Cut down in the prime of life, he leaves a large family to mourn his loss. A SALARY FOR TILE INTENDANT,-Wo are credibly informed that the town council recently passed a resolution suggesting that the intendant shall hereafter receive a stated salary of $250 per annum. The matter is left for the determination of the in-couin g council. We trust this measure will be adopted. The office of intendant is necessarily attend, ed with considerable care, labor and responsibility, and it seemus to us nothing but simple justice that the citizen who devotes a large share of hi3 Limo to the interests of the tuwn should receive some adequate cony pensation. Thbe additional expense involved'in the changerecommended by the present council is very small, and the additional cost to each tax payer will be almost in considerable. We are strongly in favor of the measure. It might be well for the matter to be brought up for discus sioir at the public meeting this afternoon, so as to have beforehand some expression of the views of the taxpayers.
