DEATH OF CAPTAIN E. J. MEANS.
Qapt. E. J. Means died of paraly..
sis, at his residence near Salem
church, in this county, on Tuesday
morning last. On Monday af
ternoon he complained of feeling
unwell, and in a short time became
paralysed, and died before day. Capt.
Means was well known both in the
county and beyond its limits. In
his youth he served as midshipman
in the United States navy, and dur
mg the late war was a captain in the
nevy of the Confederate States. The
greater portion of his life, however,
had been devoted to planting. He was
highly esteemed as a gentleman and
a Christian, and hi3 untimely death
will be lamunted by nany frienids.
Cut down in the prime of life, he
leaves a large family to mourn his
loss.
A SALARY FOR TILE INTENDANT,-Wo
are credibly informed that the town
council recently passed a resolution
suggesting that the intendant shall
hereafter receive a stated salary of
$250 per annum. The matter is
left for the determination of the
in-couin g council. We trust this
measure will be adopted. The office
of intendant is necessarily attend,
ed with considerable care,
labor and responsibility, and
it seemus to us nothing but
simple justice that the citizen
who devotes a large share of hi3
Limo to the interests of the tuwn
should receive some adequate cony
pensation. Thbe additional expense
involved'in the changerecommended
by the present council is very small,
and the additional cost to each tax
payer will be almost in considerable.
We are strongly in favor of the
measure. It might be well for the
matter to be brought up for discus
sioir at the public meeting this
afternoon, so as to have beforehand
some expression of the views of the
taxpayers.
