Columbia, Jan. 19.—The StaAe Good Roads Association had by far the most successful annual meeting here today ever experienced in its history. Nearly every county was represented by at least one or vwo while some had live or six representatives present. Three sessions were held during the day from 12 till 2 p. m. from 3:30 till 6 p. in. and from 8 to 10:30 p. m. County supervisors wore present in force and evinced an earneiA lively interest ih all proceedings. The pre sident. Mr. Paul Moore, and the sec retary, Prof. J. A. Tillinghast, of the Spartanburg County league, attended throughout and look prominent part in the discussions. Expert Speaker. An especially valuable feature was the address given by Prof. Eldrige of the public roads of service of the United States department of agricul ture. supplemented by a fine series of stereopticon views, illustrating various points in relation to the matter of good roads. Other addresses were by Governor Ansel. President Hyatt of the association and Commissioner E. J. Watson. An atmosphere of seritfus and determined purpose pervaded all the sessions an through the free in terchange of questions and answers every one received Invaluable Infor mation on every phase of the subject. Engineer Wanted. Among the resolutions passed was one urging the legislature to provide for the appointment of an expert road engineer, as a State officer to be ad viser of county officials In the prose cution of their road work and to pro mote road buiding of the best type. The county supervisors were clearly anxious to have such a State officer available for the advice and consul tation in connection with their practi cal problems. As County Supervisor Miles and several of the county com missioners were present as well as several others from Spartanburg county, who are Interested In the road question, there can be no doubt that the county will benefit greatly by this convention. The general character of the convention as a whole demonstrat ed clearly that the entire State is be coming keenly alive to the pressing importance of the road proposition and the next few years are to see rapid advance in this direction. Polly. (Baltimore News.) She didn’t shine at college, Has little school-book knowledge, Can’t parse or pose in grammar, Can’t wield geologic hammer, Knows nothing of astronomy, Political economy, Greek, Latin, Mathematics, She’s green in Browningology, Half heathenish in theology, She makes sharp witticisms On their higher criticisms, She never studied botany. Grand fads she hasn’t got any, She isn’t stuffed with art conceits. Nor puffed up with their counterfeits; In short she’s just a jolly Mbdel helpmate is my Polly. Not a pedant, nor a shocking, Stuck-up frump of a blue stocking, But a clever Ifctle woman. And so gloriously human, Born to cheer me all through life; That’s why Polly Is my wife. A girl wants to stay in bed when she has a cold so that men can’t see the red nose that goes with it. A Necklace of Love. (Frank L. Stanton.) No rubies of red for my lady, No jewel that glitters and charms. But the light of the skies in the little one’s eyes And a necklace of two little arms. Of two little arms that are clinging— Oh! ne’er was a necklace like this! And the wealth of the world and love’s sweetness impearled In the joy of a little one’s kiss. A necklace of love for my lady, That was linked by the angels above; No other but this—and the tender, sweet kiss That sealeth a little one’s love. The Softer Sex. (Brooklyn Life.) If twenty men loved twenty maids And the maids they loved them not, How many bachelors all forlorn Would woefully wish they had ne’er been born To mourn their single lot? If twenty maids loved twenty men And the men began to woo, How many brides in the briefest while. Would bring to the altar those men, and smile At the neat job carried through? Twenty! Twenty! Even a man who prefers a prize fight will lie aoout how he enjoys grand opera. FOR AGED PEOPLE. A man seems to be able to outgrow most any supersition except that his whiskers couldn’t be finer. Every case of Rheumatism has its origin and its development in the blood. It is not a disease which is contracted like a cold, but it is in the blood and system before a pain is felt, and the changes in the weather or any physical irregularities, such as a spell of indigestion, bowel disturbance, etc., are merely the exciting causes producing the pains and aches, which are the natural symptoms of the disease. Rheumatism is caused by an excess of uric acid and other corrosive, irritating poisons in the blood, which J are carried through the circulation to every part of the system. Every muscle, nerve, membrane, tissue and joint becomes saturated with these’ acrid, irritating impurities, or coated with fine, insoluble caustic matter, and the sharp, piercing pains or the dull, constant aches are felt with every physical movement. When Rie blood is filled with uric acid poison, perma nent relief ca lot be expected from liniments, plasters, or other external treatment. Such measures give temporary relief, but in order to conquer Rheumatism and bring about a — complete cure, the uric acid and other inflammatory matter must be expelled, and this cannot be done with external treatment. S. S. S. cures Rheumatism because it is a perfect and entirely vegetable blood purifier. It goes down into the circulation, neutralizes the acids, and dissolves the irritating depos its which are pressing on the sensi tive nerves and tissues and produc ing pain, enriches the weak, sour blood, and removes every atom of impurity from the circulation. So instead of being a weak, sour stream, distributing uric acid to the different parts of the system, the blood is strong and healthy and therefore able to supply every mus- cle, nerve, bone and tissue with nonrishment and strength. Then the inflam mation and swelling subside, the pains and aches cease, and not only is Rheumatism permanently cured, but under the fine tonic effects of S. S. S. the entire general health is benefitted and built up. In all forms of Rheuma tism, whether acute or chronic, S. S. S. will be found a safe and reliable treat ment. Special book on Rheumatism and any medical advice you desire wilW be furnished free. THE SWIFT SPECIFIC C0. t ATLANTA, GA. Sometime ago, I had Rheumatism and hud to quit work. Full of fact, philosophy and fun, but above all a good story, dramatic and absorbing. The school fakir, the ignorant preacher, the pompous statesman, the country camp-meet ing, the Holllsvllle Collegiate Military Institute, Professor Jefferson MarqulnlusTllson, President, with its drills and entertainments—the accent on the ments—are all there, with the appropriate and familiar trappings, fantastic regalia and general high mightiness, There is a beautiful love story as the real basis 'if the novel, and a thrilling story of a gen eral awakening wrought by an ardent young school reformer. The Dark Corner Is a book that should take Its place beside “David Harum." “Mrs. Wlgis" and a few other select volumes which paint contemporary life ''as she is lived.” The description of certain phases of village life as depicted In ‘'Holllsvllle’’ and the pic tures drawn of the bleak and dreary life of "The Dark Corner" are as clever and sprightly as anything that has been done in Am-rlcan fiction this many a day. The humor of the book Is spontaneous, true to life and absolutely wholesome. The character of “Tilson” is nothing snort of “great.”—Charlotte Observer.„ Cat It. Price $1.00. For Sale by S. B.
