Columbia, Jan. 19.—The StaAe Good Roads Association had by far the most successful annual meeting here today ever experienced in its history. Nearly every county was represented by at least one or vwo while some had live or six representatives present. Three sessions were held during the day from 12 till 2 p. m. from 3:30 till 6 p. in. and from 8 to 10:30 p. m. County supervisors wore present in force and evinced an earneiA lively interest ih all proceedings. The pre sident. Mr. Paul Moore, and the sec retary, Prof. J. A. Tillinghast, of the Spartanburg County league, attended throughout and look prominent part in the discussions. Expert Speaker. An especially valuable feature was the address given by Prof. Eldrige of the public roads of service of the United States department of agricul ture. supplemented by a fine series of stereopticon views, illustrating various points in relation to the matter of good roads. Other addresses were by Governor Ansel. President Hyatt of the association and Commissioner E. J. Watson. An atmosphere of seritfus and determined purpose pervaded all the sessions an through the free in terchange of questions and answers every one received Invaluable Infor mation on every phase of the subject. Engineer Wanted. Among the resolutions passed was one urging the legislature to provide for the appointment of an expert road engineer, as a State officer to be ad viser of county officials In the prose cution of their road work and to pro mote road buiding of the best type. The county supervisors were clearly anxious to have such a State officer available for the advice and consul tation in connection with their practi cal problems. As County Supervisor Miles and several of the county com missioners were present as well as several others from Spartanburg county, who are Interested In the road question, there can be no doubt that the county will benefit greatly by this convention. The general character of the convention as a whole demonstrat ed clearly that the entire State is be coming keenly alive to the pressing importance of the road proposition and the next few years are to see rapid advance in this direction.
