The killing of Mrs. MoMlllan was unusually brutal. After delivering a message from the woman’s husband, Patton refused to leave the woman's home. When she secured a pistol and attempted to frighten him away he grappled with and disarmed her. Roy O. West, chairman of the state central committee, called the conven tion to order and introduced Joseph G. Cannon, speaker of the house of representatives, as chairman of the convention. The convention was not as largely attended as in former years, because there were no contests of any conse quence, for the primary election held August 8 determined the candidate* for state oliices. Speaker Cannon in his speech to the convention urged that all difference be forgotten and that there be unity and harmony al along the line and that everybody work for the success of the state and national ticket. the girl, but was frightened away. The candidate told the committeemen that he wa:-, more than pleased with ihe work of the natkmal committee, and hoped the work-would be continued | n the same spirit Southern Railway Again Depositing In Georgia Banks. Atlanta, Sept. 9.—On Tuesday the Southern railway returned to the prac tice of depositing its funds in the Georgia banks. These deposits ag gregate monthly $600,000. Several months ago this road with-, drow its deposits from Georgia, al leging the Georgia garnishment laws worked a great hardship upon them in as much as their funds were being constantly tied up whenever suits for damages were filed against them. Rome, Ga., Sept. 10.—The money of the Southern railway is coming back to*Gp'>rgia. Meyers at the Portland Hotel in this city, containing notes and other valuable papers repre enting over $50,000, is strangely missing That the package reached Portland from Salem on the Southern Pacific train arriving here at 11:30 o'clock on the night of August 21, has been •stablished beyond doubt, but what be came of it after that hour would be welcome new,- to the express compa ny, to Joseph Meyers and Banker Al bert. Russian Jew, Despondent Over nances, Takes His Life. Valdosta, Ga., Sept. 9.—>M. Ras- .sus, a Russian lew. who has been liv. Ing near this city for eight or nine months, committed suicide by drink ing carbolic acid. He had been des pondent for some time over his finan- cial condition and had threatened be fore to take his life. Monday he re ceived a letter from his father in New York state saying the latter was in destitute circumstances and requested the son to send him money, liassas not only had no money with which to help his father, but owed bills here ! which he was unable to pay. The suicide lived with his brother and as soon as it was found that he had : taken poison he was hurried to the j Union hospital, but was dead when he reached there. St. Johann on the Saar, Sept. 9— Major General Iveonard Wood, of tha United States army, who is witness ing the German maneuvers here, had a narrow escape from a serious acci dent. While in the field the horn of one of the numerous staff automo biles frightened General Wood’s horse and the animal began to rear and plunge, finally falling almost on the general’s right leg.
