The killing of Mrs. MoMlllan was
unusually brutal. After delivering a
message from the woman’s husband,

The convention was not as largely
attended as in former years, because
there were no contests of any conse
quence, for the primary election held
August 8 determined the candidate*
for state oliices.
Speaker Cannon in his speech to the
convention urged that all difference be
forgotten and that there be unity and
harmony al along the line and that
everybody work for the success of the
state and national ticket.

told the members of the democratic
national committee at their meeting

fore the candidate makes his swing

presidential tight, the victory for de
mocracy’s cause was assured.
Mr. Bryan said that he an'J Mr.

fully and that he was absolutely con
fident that he would be elected If
there was a strong organization to
hold the ground that had been gained.
The outlook for victory, said Mr.
Bryan, was much brighter than it was
a month ago. The candidate told the
committeemen that he wa:-, more than
pleased with ihe work of the natkmal
committee, and hoped the work-would

Southern Railway Again Depositing In
Georgia Banks.
Atlanta, Sept. 9.—On Tuesday the
Southern railway returned to the prac
tice of depositing its funds in the
Georgia banks. These deposits ag
gregate monthly $600,000.
Several months ago this road with-,
drow its deposits from Georgia, al
leging the Georgia garnishment laws
worked a great hardship upon them
in as much as their funds were being
constantly tied up whenever suits for
damages were filed against them.
Rome, Ga., Sept. 10.—The money
of the Southern railway is coming
back to*Gp'>rgia. The depository for
north Georgia is the First National
Bank of U.-ine, This inoludeg both
freight and passenger receipts, and
amounst to $2,000 a day, while a
large balance is also carried.

Russian Jew, Despondent Over
nances, Takes His Life.
Valdosta, Ga., Sept. 9.—>M. Ras-

pondent for some time over his finan-
cial condition and had threatened be
fore to take his life. Monday he re
ceived a letter from his father in New

General Has Narrow Escape.
St. Johann on the Saar, Sept. 9—
Major General Iveonard Wood, of tha
United States army, who is witness
ing the German maneuvers here, had
a narrow escape from a serious acci
dent. While in the field the horn
of one of the numerous staff automo
biles frightened General Wood’s
horse and the animal began to rear
and plunge, finally falling almost on
the general’s right leg. The spur
was torn from the general’s boot, but
beyond a shaking up as the result of
the fall, he was unhurt

that August Belmont, president of the
Jockey Club in America, has acquir
ed a piece of land near Dieppe to
which he will transfer a number of
