Hamrick j a otta Seerstary WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN- ■ver since Mr. Bryan enuciatedhis famous free silver doctrine we have looted upon him as an extremist, and ■we have never felt like supporting him for the presidency, although he was twice nominated by the Demo cratic party. His recent advocacy of goscsmment ownership of railroads strengthened our opinion that he was a arenk; but since we have met him pereonally, and discussed these vital issues in person, and hearing his speech in our city last Friday, our opisfon of the man has changed. There is no foolishness about him. He is a plain American . citizen and withal a big man, a very big mair in fact we believe that he Is the biggest man in America. Mr. Byan’s views, so far as we were able to dis cover in the time that we were with him certainly appeared to be conser vative, there was absolutely nothing of •be extremist about him. He is not an advocate of federal ownership of r&Hroads at this time, but is an ad vocate of State ownership of these corporations. He says that munici pal ownership of waterworks and electric light plants always results in better service and is more satisfact- appropriatcd and it will not cost the tax payers one additional cent. • • • The Board of Trade is doing a good work in our community. It has several good things to its credit al ready and it has only been In exist- ence for about four months. Let us keep up the good work. People from a distance tell us that Gaffney is the best advertised town in the State. Well our city deserves all that has been said of it, and we have only commenced to tell the world what we have. “You ain’t seen no runnin’ yit.” • • • We were saddened when we heard of the death of John Charles M> Neill, of the Charlotte Observer. We fell In love with his charming, lovely personality the first time we met him. He spent some days in Gaffney reporting the Hasty trial, and wnllc here made friends with everyone with whom he came in contact. The Charlotte Observer, the State of North Carolina, and indeed the whole south, has sustained a loss in the death of this brilliant and versatile young man. • * • While in Charlotte on Thursday night, through the courtesy and kind ness of Mr. White, of the Charlotte Observer, we were shown ovfer the entire plant of that splendid news paper. The Observer has the most complete equipment of any paper in the south. In addition to printing the Observer and Evening Chronicle, this enterprising concern has a spledidly equipped job department, and a com plete outfit for matrix making. They also have a well equipped bindery where they make ledgers, account books, etc. We met several of the Observer’s clever young men and we were struck with the fact that tney were so young; it is evident that Mr. Caldwell believes in being surround ed by young blood. We spent a most pleasant hour in looking over the establishment and when we next visit Charlotte we shall make a point of visiting the Observer again. FERtONAL PARAGRAPHS. B. He does not think tbat Mr Roosevelt will be the Republican caauidate for the presidency next year; but rather thinks that the Re publicans will nominate some one who will be pledged to carry out the Rooseveltian (this word mine) doct- rine. it Mr. Bryan receives the Demo cratic nomination—and we believe that that is a foregone conclusion, we shall support him heartily and en thusiastically, because we believe that should he be elected he will go down to posterity as one of the i-reatest presidents who has ever presided over the distinies of the grandest and most glorious republic that the world has ever seen. NOTES AND COMMENT*. Tte Odd Fellows took charge of the city Friday and Saturday. It is all right though, the Odd Fellows are mighty good fellows. » • « Tfce city of Greenville worked very hard in an effort to get Mr. Bryan to step there and make a speech a* soon as they heard that Gaffney was mov ing in the matter, but they failed. That is always the way, just let a big town like Gaffney make a move to get something and every little i town in the country will try to copy , after her. e believe that there iyjve been fewer business failures in Gaffney within the last ten years than in any town of like population in the State. There have been only two or pos sibly three business failures in the town within the last ten years, and we don t believe that there is a town anywhere in this country that has the number of business houses that Gaffney has that can equal this record. ‘ Moral; Gome to Gaffney. • • • Superintendent Spears of the grad ed schools Is presor/tfng a petition to the qualified voters of Gaffney ask-; tag for an election upon the question as to whether an election shall be | ordered by w hich the graded schools ; In the city will receive a donation of about $600. There is no reason why anyone should refuse to sign this pe tition as the money has already been That former paint was about two- thirds not paint, but this proud and ambitious paint was only about one- third not paint. It succeeded in get ting a trial; 25 gallons, 5 kits of 5 gallons each. WThen the painter had used one kit, lie called the manager; not satisfact ory; 4 of the kits returned. A paint, one-third not paint, is not good-enough to displace Devoe. This was several years ago. That proud and ambitious paint is better now'; it is nearer honest; it isn’t short-measure at all and only 15 per cent adulterated. It’s a pretty-good paint now; 13 or 14 gallons of it goes as far as 10 of Devoe. Judge I D Fairchild owns two houses alike in Lufkin. Texas. J M Torrence painted both houses, one Devoe, and the other with that proud and ambitious adulterated-15-per-cent paint. It took 151-2 gallons Devoe and 25 gallons of the proud and am bitious paint. It takes a pretty-good paint to dis turb Devoe. Yours truly 61 F W DRVOE & CO P. S. Oaffmn Hardware Company sell our paint. i»n mi —ilH fii-rr-i -~ I — — —^ argains!
