New York. Nov. 8.—This qlty yester- da;, elected George B. McClellan, the (nndidate of the Democratic party, mayor by a narrow margin over Wil liam Randolph Hearst, the nominee ol tiie Municipal Ownership League. William Travers Jerome, indepen dent candidate for district attorney, was apparently re-elected. With election districts to be reported today, he had a lead of 3,526 vote# over James W. Osborne, the Tammany candidate. The complete but unofficial returns gives McClellan 3.4§6 plurality over Hearst. The total vote was: McClelan, 228,*6d; Hearst. 225,166; Ivins, 137.048. The new city government, exclusive of the board of aldeemen. will be con stltuted as follows: Mayor—George B. McClellan (Deni.). Borough presidents—For Manhattan, John F. Ahcarn (Dem.); Bronx. Louis F. Haffon (Deni.); Brooklyn. Bird S. Coler (M. O.); Queens, Joseph M Burns (M. O. A Dem.); Richmond. George M. Cromwell (Rep.). At an early hour this morning Mr. Hearst left his headquarters In the Hoffman House for his residence, fol lowing a conference with his campaign managers, and the heads of the Munici pal Ownership ticket, including Justice Seabury. Clarence B. Shearn and Max F. Ihmsen. Mr. Hearst himself would make no statement, and referred all quesiloners to Mr. Ihmsen. The latter said that Mr. Hearst claimed his elec tion as mayor by a good majority. That a fraudulent vote of at least 40.0(K> had been in Greater New York was the claim of the Hearst managers. It had been decided. Mr. Ihmsen said, to de mand a recount of the entire tickei. \ after 194 ballot boxes said to he miss ing had been located and counted, t was found Mr. Hearst still lacked suf ficient votes to elect him. Hearst Makes Statement. Afier considering the situation fully Mr. Hearst gave out the following stat ment, which is repeated today in his newspaper. The Evening Journal; “We have this election. All Tam many’s fraud, all Tammany’s corrup tion, all Tammany’s intimidation and violence, all Tammany’s false reglstra tion. Illegal voting and dishonest count Ing have not been able to overcome a great popular majority. The recount will show that we have won the elec tion by many thousands of votes. “I shall fight this battle to the end in behalf of the people, who have cast their votes for me. and who shall no b< disfranchised by any effort of crim Inal bosse s. Win. Randolph Hearst.” The Evening Journal also prints a notice that bets on the mayoralty ; l ould not be paid, declaring that th( official count will show Hearst elected majorities ranging from 4,000 to 7,000 The clean smeep astounded the fu ■ ion leaders. While the light between Schmitz and Partridge wits secretly conceded by them to be an open one, the Schmitz parly attribute the resul: to an endorsement of the present ad ministration. Following is the complete vote: Schmitz (Union loibor), 40,1.91. Partridge (fusion), 28,687. Schmitz’s majority, 11,504. Ohio Goes Democratic. Columbus, O., Nov. 8.—John M. Pat tison (Dem.) will be the next gover nor of Ohio, and his party associatet on the state ticket have al«o all been elected, according to the indications ol precinct returns and county plurality figures received here up to 11 o'clock this mo’rning. The exact figures re ceived are unknown and may not be known today, but there leerne no rea son to doubt the success of the entire Democratic state ticket by at least a safe plurality, while Cfoairman Gar b'er claims 36,000 plurality for Patti son and the Demorcratic ticket. Up to 11 o'clock Chairman Dick had refused to admit officially the defeat of hie ticket, but it was understood at Re publican headquarters that the reports from county chairmen indicated that result. Both houses of th« legislature will be Democratic, the last hope of the Re publicans vanishing with the report that the Hamilton county delegation was solidly Democratic. Chicago la Republican. Chicago, Nov. 8.—The Republicans swept Chicago yesterday, electing every candidate on their ticket. The complete returns early today show tin following figures: Judge superior court: Gary (Rep.) 98.928: MdBwan (Rep.), 90,932; Ball (•Rep.), 91,865: Vavanangh (Rep.), 100, 348: Ramsey (Dem.), 71,337; Smletana (Dem ), 65,263; Shepard (Dem.), .78. 522; Werno (Dem.), 69,564. Judge superior court to fill vacancy: Smith (Rep.). 83,743; Tolman (Dem.), 81,718. Judge circuit court: Pinckney (Rep.). 88.278; Doyle (Dorn.), 77,349. In the vote for trustees of the san itary district. McCormick, the highest man on the Republican ticke>, received 86,643 votes, against 80,377 for Webb the highest man on the Democratic ticket. Baker, the low man on the Republican ticket, received in the city 2,258 more votes than Webb, the higi man on the Democratic ticket. Andrew Bird was cut in several places by George Holaway and his brother in a free-for-all fight. Bird was brought to Stillmore for medical treat ment, but died soon thereafter. The Republican victory all along the line with the exception of the contest for lieutenant governor, was just as pronounced as it was at midnight last night.
