The work of boring the new- city well was begun yesterday morning. Messrs. Carroll & Byers are prepar ing to enlarge their clothing depart ment. There was not a single Saturday or Sunday sinner on hand at the mayor’s court yesterday morning. Mayor Gaffney has had three neat and substantial swings put up in the city park for the pleasure of the little folks. j. E. Waddill, representing the Tyson & Jones Buggy Co., at Carthage, N. C\, was in the city yesterday in the interest of his firm. Mr. Blain Hollifield and Miss Lizzie McCombs, both of Henrietta, N. C., were married in this city Sunday by Magistrate C. T. Bridges. The Limestone Mills are offering to contract for a limited amount of cotton to be delivered in October and November at 10c. See their ad. in this issue. An excursion train was run from this place to Asheville, N. C., yester- vlay. Quite a number of Gaffneyites availed themselves of the apportunity to visit the “Laud of the Sky.” H. L. The annual meeting of the stock holders of the Gaffney Manufacturing company was held Thursday in their office in this city. Quite a number of the stockholders were present, and some of those who could not attend were represented by proxy. The report of the new presi dent, T. E. Moore, was submitted, and it was very satisfactory to the stock holders, as it showed the affairs of the mill to he in a prosperous condition. A few small changes were made in the by-laws of the company, and the fol lowing motions were passed: “That the board of directors be elected at the regular meeting of the stockholders for one year, instead of for two years, as heretofore: and also, that the term of the office of secretary be made one year instead of two years.” The following directors were then elected under the revised by laws: T. E. Moore, J. B. Cleveland, J. A. Carroll, A. N. Wood, O. G. Falls, W. C. Hamrick, T. M .Littlejohn, J. Q. Little. L. G. Potter. After the stockholders’ meeting ad journed. a meeting of the directors was held. At the latter meeting the resignation of Mr. W. M. Webster, as secretary, was presented, and accept ed, and Mr. L. G. Potter, of Gastonia, N. C.. was elected in his place for the ensuing year. Mr. Webster has been a valuable man to the company, and a vote of thanks was tendered him for the efficient services he lias rendered. Mr. Potter will enter upon the duties of his office at once. Npllie Corry, colored, wife of Luke Corry, died at Jier home in this city Saturday and was buried Sunday at the colored burying-ground at Lime stone. She had not been in good health for some time, but was able to be up. Wednesday an operation was perform ed upon her .and she never recovered from the shock. She was about thi/ty- two years of age, and stood high in colored society. Luke’s many friends, both white and colored, sympathize with him in hJa bereavement. County Executive Committee Meets. The county executive committee of the Democratic party met in the court house Saturday to arrange for the primary to choose a successor to Hon. W. D. Kirby, member of the house, re signed. It was decided to hold the primary on August 13th. The general election takes place on August 29th. it was decided in case no on< received a majority in the primary to allow the two highest candidates to enter the I general election. Each candidate will i be assessed and said assessment '< must be paid on or before next Sat-! urday. Mr. Carroll Succeeds Col. Wardlaw. At a meeting of the directors of the National Bank of Gaffney and also the Gaffney Savings Bank, Mr. J. A. Car- roll was elected vice-president to. suc ceed Col. J. G. Wardlaw, resigned. The directors <$' the Gaffney Savings Bank declared a semi-annual dividend of 1 per cent, to be paid today. Both these institutions are in a flourishing condition and are a credit to the bus iness ability of the gentlemen who have them in charge. LOOK OUT!
