Edmond Leiouse, wishing to play a joke on his wife, dressed up a wax figure, the head ol which and one of the hands he ligli iy attached to the body by means o! gum and placed it in a bed. While Leiouse was watching the pro ceedlngs from behind some draperie.: his wife, about to retire, grasped whai she supposed in the semi-darkness t<- be her husband’s hand, but which wa: in reality that of the wax figure. The hand, cold and clammy, detached it self from the limp and remained iu her grasp. With a terrible cry oi terror, Mme’. Leiouse let the hand drop to the ground and flung her arms around the figure’s neck, when the head also became detached and rolled down upon the floor. The terror-strick en woman, uttering piercing shrieks ran down the stairs, where she wa^ stopped by some neighbors and detain ed. When the police arrived it was found that she had become raving mad. l^ater she was conveyed to the asy lum. The charges that the mining, manufacturing and transportation com pany is operating at a disadvantage and that it is unable to pay its debts. The company owns two steamers, 15 barges, a general store, 1,100 acres of mining land and other property. The mines and store are near Coffman, O., and the general office is in tho city. Died Performing His Duty. New York. April 26.—In a fire alarm on the east side Acting Battalion Chief Wieland was lolled, and f\H.* end of the block on Grand Orchard and Allen streets was gutted, causing a loss os timated at about $200,000. The fire was under control and Wieland was aset nding a ladder on tho Grand street side when it slipped and he was thrown through a plate g'ass window. Ho was removed to a hospital, where he died. Boy Accidentally Kills Brother. Portsmouth, 0., April 26. Before Po. Herman E. W. Smith accompanied hi wife to church he laid his revolver on a stand at hlmo. His son Earl, agi d 14, and his brother Cassius, a j011!! of 1f», came into the house later, and seeing the revolver bt gan handling it.
