St. lyiuis, April 6.—Complete first returns 1'roiji last night's municipal election returns give Mayor Holla Wells. Democratic candidate for re elect ion, a plurality of 1,418, over Ju(lg>‘ John A. Talty, Republican. The vote for the candidates was as fol lows: W. 11s, 44,208; Talty, 42,700; Lee Merriwether, Independent, public own ership, 3,328. Never before in the history of St. Louis has a mayoralty election been fought so stubbornly. Until complete returns from the last ward had been received, the issue was in doubt, and the official canvass of the returns may make a change in the complexion of j the result. The candidates for city! oflices either ran slightly ahead or! behind their party leaders, and the' Democrats and Republicans aboi" j equally divided honors for the offices j other than that of mayor. The proposition to increase the bond indebtedness of the city by ! $9,000,000 for the purpose of making public improvements which was j strongly endorsed by Mayor Wells and ; his party, was overwhelmingly defeat ed. Two amendments to the city charter were also defeated by largo | majorities. 1 t 2 t t t MM 4 5 4 THE GAFFNEY HARDWARE CO, HAS OPENED with a large and complete line of Hardware, Cutlery, Farming Imple ments, Harness, etc. Your patronage isysolicited. : : : : : EYERYTH1NG NEW LIMESTONE STREET.
