Truths that Strike Home
Tour grocer is honest and—if ho cares to do so—can tell
you that he knows very little about the bulk collee he
sells vou. How can he know, where it originally came from,
^ how it was blended—or With What

ST. LOUIS IS DEMOCRATIC.
Mayor Rolla Wells Is Re-Elected by
a Good Sized Plurality.
St. lyiuis, April 6.—Complete first
returns 1'roiji last night's municipal
election returns give Mayor Holla
Wells. Democratic candidate for re
elect ion, a plurality of 1,418, over
Ju(lg>‘ John A. Talty, Republican. The
vote for the candidates was as fol
lows:
W. 11s, 44,208; Talty, 42,700; Lee
Merriwether, Independent, public own
ership, 3,328.
Never before in the history of St.
Louis has a mayoralty election been
fought so stubbornly. Until complete
returns from the last ward had been
received, the issue was in doubt, and
the official canvass of the returns may
make a change in the complexion of j
the result. The candidates for city!
oflices either ran slightly ahead or!
behind their party leaders, and the'
Democrats and Republicans aboi" j
equally divided honors for the offices j
other than that of mayor.
The proposition to increase the
bond indebtedness of the city by !
$9,000,000 for the purpose of making
public improvements which was j
strongly endorsed by Mayor Wells and ;
his party, was overwhelmingly defeat
ed. Two amendments to the city
charter were also defeated by largo |
majorities.

Girl Dies During Thunder Storm.
Decatur, Ala., April 5.—While stand
ing in the doorway of her father’s
country home in southeastern Lime-'
stone county, 15 miles from here, Miss
Grace Yancey, a popular rural belle,!
fell dead during a thunder storm. it
,was found that she was not struck by;
lightning, but had been suffering from i
a severe mental strain for several!
days, and it is the opinion of the at- j
tending physician that death was :
caused by a shock to her nerves, ’su ;
perinduced by the noise of a sharp
clap of thunder. Death was almost
instantaneous after the clap of thun

DEMOCRAT WINS IN CHICAGO.
Issue Was Municipal Ownership a!
Public Utilities.
Chicago, April 5.—A political torus
lo yesterday overwhelmed one of th
most ruggedly unique leaders in the
country. Incidentally the Republican
party met defeat in a memorable el
fort to capture the mayoralty of Chi
cago. As a direct result the city is j
officially committed to the policy ol
the quickest possible cessation of pri
vate franchises for public utilities.
Municipal ownership Is especially
threatening street cur lines, valued
high up in the millions.
After winning successfully four re
markable biennial fights of indepeu
dents against the regular Republican
party organisation here, John Maynard
Harlan, son of Associate Justice Har
lan, of the United States sufrrem
court, was a loser as Republican can
didate for mayor. The defeat is a'-
tributed to an extraordinary whirl ot
causes, starting with political reveng
and taking in a wide sweep, embrac
ing the most up to-date socialism as
a factor. The victor is Judge Ed
ward F. Dunne, a Democrat.
Judge Dunne was elected by a p!u
rality of 24,248 and received a major
ity of 945 of all the votes cast. lie
also had the distinction of receiving
the greatest vote ever cast in Chicago
for a candidate for the oflice of mayor
He was given 1CLG59 votes out of a
total of 322,373. Mr. Harlan, the Re
publican candidate, received 137,411.
Collins, the Socialist candidate, 20,323
and Stewart, Prohibition, 2,980.
