Judge Hargis in the latters office, de clared to him “Jim Cockrill has got to be killed, for if he is not, Cockrill will kill Callahan or me, or both of us.” Witness said he declined to partic ipate in a plot, and Hargis then said he would have to get George Smith, or Curtis Jett, to do ft. On the day after Cockrill was killed, he was at Hargis’ store. Callahan and Judge Hargis were there, and when the news came from Lexington that Cockrill had died in a hospital they both smiled at each other. He said Hargis asked- him Lily recently what he would testi fy li in this case, but that he would not t fll him. Atlanta, Knoxville and Northern rail road, near T> llico Junction, 54 milci- south of Knoxville. The dead are: H. C. Jordan, engineer, Blue Ridge Ga. Stewart I. Armstrong, fireman, of Atlanta, Ga. Two brakemen were more or les* seriously injured. The dead bodies were brought tc this city this afternoon by a local tin dertaker having instructions to re ceive them. Both trains were southbound, run ning as the first and second section of No. 17. The first section had stopped and the second section plowed Into it. The dead men were in charge of the locomotive of the second section. They were caught under their en gine and burned to death. A wreck ing train and crew was sent to the scene from Blue Ridge, Ga., and the wreck was cleared in a few hours. CAR OF DYNAMITE EXPLODES. Two Members of the Train Crew Are Blown Into Pieces. Paris, March 22.—2:30 p. m.—Anto nio Priest, minister of fine arts in the Gambetta cabinet, died today as the result of two shots In the head, self- inflicted. He had long been * vie tim of melancholy. It was believed to have been intensified recently by differences with Rosita Mauri, the celebrated dancer of the opera, with whom he was closely associated. Nashville, Tenn., March 22.—Both hmises of the general assembly mot in Joint session today and canvassed the vote taken yesterday for United Slate- Senator to succeed the late William B. Bate. James B. Frazier was d< dared elected. The vote was: Fra ztter, 104; Browidow, 22. Captain John W. Morton whs today elected SK'cretary of state, and Frank Dibbreli comptroller. Large Fire In Georgia Town. Gainesville, Ga.. March 22.—Brandon & Delaperrlere’s harness and collar factory at Hoschton, was destroyed by fire at an early hour Tuesday morn ing. The concern had a plant valued at between $125,000 and $150,000, and there was insurance amounting to p- proxlmately $100,000 on the plant. The origin of the fire is unknown. It was not discovered until after the flames had gained too much headway to be controlled. The insurance was largely placed through Winder agen cies, though something like $30,000 was carried by Gainesville agencies. Brown refused the petition of ex-Chlef of Police John Case for man damus to compel Mayor Lyons to re instate him. Case was suspended, at his own request, because of alleged shortage of accounts when he was county tax collector. Evidence In troduced showed that when suspendt-d he was $300 short in his acounts with the city, - which was paid after his suspension. Other evidence showed alleged misconduct in office.
