The Middleton Stock Company closed a successful three nights en gagement at the Star Theatre Satur- das night with a melo drama styled “John Martin’s Secret.” The acting was up to the standard of previous plays presented by that company. “Rastus ’ convered himself with glory and convulsed the audience with laughter. “The Man From Mexico”, in which Walter £. Perkins’ company of comedians will be seen at the Star Theatre next Saturday night has bad two seasons of really great suc cess in the principal cities of the country. It is from the pen of H. A. DeSouchet, who also wrote “My Friend From India,” and has been accorded by critties and the pub lic generally, the distinction of being the funniest comedy of its class and one of the very few that create laugh ter without any resort to question able methods. The story of Ben jamin Fitzhew’s thirty days sojourn on Blackwell’s Island, in the garb of a convict, while he leads his wife to believe that he is taking a vacation trip to Mexico, develops a rare fund of laughable situations and humorous lines, and the fun begins with the rising of the curtain and does not end ,even with the final fall, for laughter comes involuntarily when one recalls the escapades of Mr. Fitzhew. The company is said to be an excellent one, and all the appoint ments are in the highest style of stage art. The Man from Mexico Company comes from Charlotte to Gaffney and goes from here to Greenville. They only stop in the large cities, but having this night open they preferred to stop in Gaffney. The main por tion of the reserved seats will go at fifty cents. It is a reall good show and well worth the price charged. The $2000 claim of A. H. Pollock Money to Loan against J. D. Jones, surviving partner of Jones & Duff and individually, bankrupt secured by a mortgage of the firm assests and contended for as a secured claim which should be paid in full, in preferance to unse cured creditors was held by G. W. Speer, refree in bankruptcy, to con stitute a preference under the bank rupt law and that the same was void. N. W. Hardin, attorney for the clai mant, Pollock, took the case to the district court, and there with the assistance of H. J. Hajneswortb ably argured the case. The claim was resisted by J. C. Jefferies and Maj. J. H. Hart of Yorkville, representing the bankrupt and certain creditors, and Butler<& Osborne for certain cerdi- tors. Judge Brawley rendered his opinion Friday sustaining the referee. Our First Horseless Currlage. The first Automobile to appear on our streets came out Sunday. It was Mr. H. D. Wheat’s. While Mr Wheat has had it at bis home for some weeks, he has not had^it on the streets before Sunday. It is a mag nificent machine, and presents a fine appearance on the road, and Mr. Wheat seems to be a good manager of it. Our fine streets and the good roads of the county makes this an ideal place to own one of these modern roadsters. __ TeU Your Grocer What You Want.
