We have been furnished with the following facte relative to the jury law and the manner of drawing jurors by clerk of the Court J. Eb. Jefferies, which we publish as a matter of general interest and information: The grand jury for 11)02 and the pettit jury for the first week of the ensuing term of court were drawnWed- nesday under the new jury law. and the drawing was done publicly in the clerk’s office and witnessed b" a num ber of citiz-.-ns. The new law re quires that the names of one-third of the qualified voters of the county, who arc eligible, be placed in the jqry box by the uudi'.or. treasurer and clerk, who «re the jury commission ers, and who do toe drawing after advertising the place, day and hour of tl.e drawing, for ten days on the court house d ior. The old law only rtquired doub e the number to serve during the year to be placed in the box, In January of each year, by the county commissioners, and the clerk, auditor and treasurer did the draw ing in public as under the new act, but were not required to advertise. The old law provided that all names drawn from the box be taken as jurors unless known by the jury com- missiont rs to be exempt or otherwise ineligible to serve, and 'he new law is the same as to this particular. Borne complaints have been made from different parts of the county that the jurors were not properly dis tributed over the county or that their particular sectioo bad cot been represented on the juries, but this is a matter beyond the control of the jury commissioners, for they simply have to draw from the Dames put in the box after thoroughly mix ing and shaking them up. and are compelled to take them as they are drawn, if eligible to serve. The jurors Wednesday were drawn from seven hundred names which had been carefully placed In the box by the jury commissioners under the new law. The jury for the second week of the March term of court will be drawn on next Monday the 24th, lust., at 2 o’clock p. m., in the clerk’s office. It may be of Interest to some to know bow the jury box Is arranged and kept. It is a strong and sub stantial box without aperture or openlugs when closed, with three apartments as follows: One called tne “general jury box” which must contain all the names put in; one called the “tales box” which must contain not less than 100, nor more than 400 of the names of persons in the general jury box, wbo live within five miles of the court bouse, 'rom which to draw j^rois to supply dr- ficiencles; and the other apartment is to contain a list of all names 10 each of the boxes as above stated, and Is to hold envelopes containing the names of all jurors drawn for the different terms ot courts during the year. The box ia kept securely locked with three separate and strong lock*, each being differeut from the other two, with no two keys alike, so that all three of the jury commls* siouers must be present together at the same time and place in order to lock or unlock and open said box.
