A (Irmiwnori (<riitlf iimn Say* Good TIiIiikh About Ourjt'ity. Rev. A. McA. Pittman, of Green wood, one of the proprietors of the South Carolina Baptist, preached in the First Baptist church hero Sun day morning and evening, and in the Second Baptist at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Notwithstanding the ex tremely bad weather, very good con gregations greeted him at both places and were repaid for braving the ele ments by hearing some good preach ing Mr. Pittman said it was a bad day, but he “did the best he could” for them. Mr. Pittman was also here in the interest of his paper, and has succeeded in adding many new names to his subscription list from this place. He was here last week for the same purpose; and the follow ing from his pen was inspired by that visit: “Away to GufTney again. This city seems to be a place to be desired by newspaper drummers. There were at least four of them on hand, plead ing for patronage, in a single duy last week. But Gaffney is noted for her large hearted, liberal enterprising citizens. She extends a hearty wel come to all wl’.o make it known that they have come within her gates for a praiseworthy purpose. We were greatly encouraged in our efforts for this paper. We are’certuinly glsd that so few people attended the “farce” at the opera house lust night. The so- called performance was even worse than that given us by the "Eclipse Stock Co.” Indeed it was fierce. How in the name of common sense people with no more ability as actors and actresses than those people pos sessed last night can have the unmiti gated "gall” to go through the coun try and impose themselves upon the public is past our understanding The work was the bumest of the bum, and there was not a single re deeming feature in the entire show, unless we except the dancing of one of the "comedians”—God save the name. Bob Wilkins and Fred Riley, two youths of color, were on hand for disorderly conduct. The case against Riley was dismissed ; but Wilkins was not so fortunate, as he was requested to pay a fine of $o.00. He paid. The next case was against a white man who had been enjoying himself for several days to the extent of vio lating some of the city ordinances made against such fun. He was “given” 50 or twenty-five days on the streets; but was finally granted the alternative of leaving town. He accepted the latter and hied himself thencewards. Another drunk and disorderly case was offset by a fine of $11.50 or twen ty-five days on the city streets. The last case on the docket was for disorderly conduct without the charge of "drunk,” and it netted the city treasury $0 10. Saleftday. Yesterday was salesday and quite a nice lot of Gaffney real estate was offered for sale, all of which brought fair prices. Rev. C. E. Robertson’s house and lot was bid in by Clerk of the Court J. Eb.
