The Dummy road company is making extensive repairs on its track. There was a severe storm at Taco- let Monday afternoon and is reported to have injured cotton wheat and oat. Rev. Auther Crane will begin a se ries of meetings in the First Baptist church June 11 th and continue one week. Many country teams, carriages and wagons have been engaged to carry people to the Battle Ground tomorrow. The new cottages of Hon. J. C. Otts. Hamp Pridmore and J. Eb Jef feries on Buford street are nearing completion. Murvin Cunningham, formerly of the Cherokee Investigator, has ac- cjpted a position with the Pearl Steam Laundry. We are requested to state that the presence of all members of the First Baptist church are desired at both the morning and evening services Sunday. Governor Ellerbe is reported as growing weaker. So much so that he has been compelled to take his bed agaain. Ho is still ut bis home at Sellers. Rev. S. T. Creech will fill his regu lar appoint merit on next Sunday, Beulah ut li a. m., Gaffney at 8. p m. Church conference will be hold ut both places. The weather is unusually cool for the lust of May. The growth of plants are somewhat retarded, but they look healthy and the farmers are working them with a rush. The Gaffney Municipal League will give a "Smoker” at their hall on next Tuesday evening, at which the Fourth of July celebration will be inaugurated. Invitations to the "Smoker” will be issued Monday. We have received much needed rains this week and vegetation is growing off under their enlivening effect. The rains have left the ground in good condition for work and Cher okee farmers are making the most of it. Mayor Calvert, of Spartanburg, on Tuesday shot a negro who he was attempting to arrest for repeatedly insulting ladies on the streets. The negro drew his razor on the Mayor when he promptly shot him. The negro then run but was caught and put in jail. He was not seriously hurt. Colh-ge TruMtec* Meet. The board of trustees of Lime stone Coliege met at Spartanburg Tuesday. The full board was in at tendance and was composed of Capt. John 11. Montgomery, Chairman, Muj. A. B. Woodruff, S. B. Ezell, Capt. T. B. Martin, R. B. Monk, J. A. Carrol., A. B, Gross. Dr. W. C. Hamrick, of this city, was elected a trustee to fill a vacancy. The meeting was a very important one and marks a new era in the life of historic old • Limestone College. Much important business was trans acted all tending to advance every detail of the work at the college and to increase its facilities. Prof. Lee Davis Lodge, Ph. D. of Columbian University of Washing ton, D. C. f was elected president of the college, and Capt. H. P. Griffith the learned and efficient teacher and long time indefatigable worker for the advancement of Limestone Col lege, was elected principle teacher. The committee decided to build a largo annex to tho college at once, which will add much to Its capacity and beauty. Fully $15,000 dollars will be spent on the college this cum mer in additions and equipments. The trustees are determined that nothing shall be left undone that will make Limestone College one of the most perfectly equipped and ably managed female colleges in the country. Guffney hails with delight the ac tion of tho trusteos and assures them in herself a faithful coadjutor. Fatal AceMent. The northbound vestibule No. 38 which passes Guffney at 0:55 p. U) M killed Mrs. Sallie Patterson, and fatally injured her son Lee Patterson Wednesday afternoon, near Mount Zion between Guffney and Spartan burg. Mrs. Patterson’s head was severed from her body, the head of the young man was crushed and later died of his injuries. A It min way Dr. W. A. Fort’s horse ran away with him Tuesday while driving near the city threw him outof his buggy. The Doctor was at first thought to be seriously injured, but it turns out that he escaped with severe bruises. His many friends hope to see him come around all right in a few days. The buggy was torn to pieces. A DlutliiiruUlied Visitor. Hon.Theodore Bierck, Royal 8weed- ish and Norwegian Vice Consul, has been spending several days in the city on a visit to his nephew, Mr. J. Carroll attended a meeting of the trustees of Limestone College at Spartanburg Tuesday. W. L. Calvert, of Clifton, was in the city Wednesday. Magness, a merchant and turrner of Grassy Pond, made a business visit to the city Tuesday. Dr. S. B. Crawley made a business trip to Greenville Tuesday. Col. John Logan Black, who has been spending some time on his farms in the low Country, came ovtr to the city from Blacksburg Wednes day. The Col. is in line health and was heartily greeted by his many friends here. Kenneth Baker, formerly of Gull- ney but now a prosperous young busi ness man of Prosperity, Newberry county, is in the city on a visit to his father, Alderman L. Baker, on Gian- urd street. . The program for the rervices had been well arranged and the man- tier in which every part of it was per- formed showed tho thourongh train ing of the children and their deep in terest in Sunday School work, and how largely they, their section and Cherokee County are indebted to Mr. T. G. Chalk. Miss Ada Brown, Miss Suliie Chalk, and Miss Pauline Pettit for their untiring and intele- gent work in trying to advance the moral and spiritual interest of those who are growing up around them. The services were conducted by Rev. F. C. Hickson in his known able and impressive manner. Every detail was taken up in its order from start to finish and performed in a manner most creditable to the participants. Prof. W. F. McAuthur and Rev. W. T. Thompson, of this city, delivered interesting and instructive addresses, both of which were full of congratu lations to teachers and children for their past work and encouragement to them for the future.
