West End High School Closes. The West End ili"h .School, of which the Rev. It. (,\ Campbell, col ored, is principal, closed a most sue- cessful first session Monday night. During the session as many as 121 scholars were in attendance. The closing exercises were of the highest order and consisted of the reading of essays, recitations, singing, etc., and were conducted at Dunton's Chapel in the presence of a large crowd. The decorum of the attend ance was remarkable and indicates that the colored people are fast learn ing to conduct themselves in u man ner befitting their race. Mr. Cap Clary is reported as in a j low state of health. J. C. JelTeries moved into his hand some new house on (rranard street last week. Material is being placed for the erection of the new Second Baptist church building and work is to begin shortly. Rev. C. F. Felment will preach next Sabbath at Draytonville at 11a.m. and at Timber Ridge at 1 o’clock in the afternoon. Ilealan, Notary Public, of Blacksburg, last week united in the holy bonds of wedlock Mr. A. J. Rod gers and Miss Mattie Hoode, both of Gaffney. In speaking of the affair Mr. ilealan remarked. “The young man seemed to be in a great hurry, hut coming from the hustling little city that he did. my suspicious were not aroused. Mayor Wood's Monday Matinee. Ben Bonner and Waller Stegall were before Mayor Wood Monday morning for a Sunday fray. They each paid $•’>. Stegall for having his fun and Bonner for carrying “knucks.” The other offenders were three col ored damsels for raising a disturbance and being disorderly generally. Two were fined $2 :.’><» each or five days in the guard-house and the other was ac quitted. A colored gent was arraigned for “kicking a lady in de mouf,” hut his honor thought the gent more sinned against than sinner, so he declared it no case. — - Gaffney Pcs' Office. While Postmaster Littlejohn, under the policy of Mr. McKinley, will be Post.Master at Gaffney until 189H. we learn that a number of applica tions are being made for the place, in cluding one by a North Carolinian, while it may be possible that Mr. Littlejohn will not be his own success or Gaffney will never have a more worthy and competant PostMaster, nor will she have one that will he more courteous and attentive or more universally respected.
