West End High School Closes.
The West End ili"h .School, of
which the Rev. It. (,\ Campbell, col
ored, is principal, closed a most sue-
cessful first session Monday night.
During the session as many as 121
scholars were in attendance. The
closing exercises were of the highest
order and consisted of the reading
of essays, recitations, singing, etc.,
and were conducted at Dunton's
Chapel in the presence of a large
crowd. The decorum of the attend
ance was remarkable and indicates
that the colored people are fast learn
ing to conduct themselves in u man
ner befitting their race.
Mr. Cap Clary is reported as in a j
low state of health.
J. C. JelTeries moved into his hand
some new house on (rranard street
last week.
The Mountain View Land Com
pany is having Main street opened
through its property.
W. M. Corry, a worthy colored
citizen of Wilkinsville. was in Mon
day and joined Tiik Lkdokk’b list.
Material is being placed for the
erection of the new Second Baptist
church building and work is to begin
shortly.
Rev. C. F. Felment will preach next
Sabbath at Draytonville at 11a.m.
and at Timber Ridge at 1 o’clock in
the afternoon.
Sheriff Ross sent n white woman
who had been adjudged insane to the
state hospital for the insane last Sat
urday by his son Logan.

work on the second new store of R. A.

will be up to date in every particular.
Comparatively few people were in
the city last Saturday. We know
what was the matter, work was the
order of the day. Our farmers are
hustling.
Bud Baldwin and Miss Ella Justice,
two of the mil! operatives, were quiet
ly married last Sunday week by Rev.
D. W. Thomason, of the Second Bap
tist church.
Our planters have certainly had an
opport unity to make hay while the
sun shown t he past week. It has been
hot enough to cure any kind of hay
for the past several days.
Even the loungers around the tem
ple of justice have got that tired feel
ing and while away their time play
ing “drafts.” “The sons of rest ’
are now in good working order.
J. Ramsey and family have moved
from Clifton to (laffney. Mr. Ramsey
lived in (ialfney before moving to
Clifton and after living at Clifton de
cided <o move back to (Juffney, as it.
was the best town in the Piedmont
Belt.
Tiik Lkpukk is indebted to its friend
Tom Petty for a lot of delicious
peaches which grew on his plantation
one mile southwest of the city. We
can assure our friends that they
caused us no such trouble as “did the
peach of emerald hue to little John and
ills sister Sue.”
Since our last issue work has been
commenced on tl., r.-w Baptist I’.ir-
sonage. It is located on t!.- conoT
of Johnson and Montgomery Strv< t.
It will contain seven or ei^ht rooms,
will he a credit to our Baptist friends,
a comfort to their worthy minister
and an ornament to the city.
A gentleman mentioned the fact to
Tiik Lkocku the other day tl-a- he
hud seen Fitzsimmons and Sullivan
shake bunds on our streets lust Fri
day. He added that they were two
nice looking gentleman. We assent
to the latter judgment, and believe
they are better men than Boh or
John, even if they are not so renown.
J. R. Ilealan, Notary Public, of
Blacksburg, last week united in the
holy bonds of wedlock Mr. A. J. Rod
gers and Miss Mattie Hoode, both of
Gaffney. In speaking of the affair
Mr. ilealan remarked. “The young
man seemed to be in a great hurry,
hut coming from the hustling little
city that he did. my suspicious were
not aroused. However, I learned la
ter that they hud left home without
the consent of all concerned.”

Jas. .1. Gaffney for one of the finest
specimens of beet it has been our
privilege to enjoy this season. It
heats any beet we have seen so far.
Mr. aril Mrs. Gaffney are ever
thoughtful of Tmk Lkdukk and have
time and again reminded us of their
thoughtfulness by such kindness,
all of which is duly appreciated and
goes to make pleasant traveling along
the rugged road of country journalism.
Mayor Wood's Monday Matinee.
Ben Bonner and Waller Stegall were
before Mayor Wood Monday morning
for a Sunday fray. They each paid
$•’>. Stegall for having his fun and
Bonner for carrying “knucks.”
The other offenders were three col
ored damsels for raising a disturbance
and being disorderly generally. Two
were fined $2 :.’><» each or five days in
the guard-house and the other was ac
quitted.
A colored gent was arraigned for
“kicking a lady in de mouf,” hut his
honor thought the gent more sinned
against than sinner, so he declared it
no case.

the policy of Mr. McKinley, will be
Post.Master at Gaffney until 189H.
we learn that a number of applica
tions are being made for the place, in
cluding one by a North Carolinian,
while it may be possible that Mr.
Littlejohn will not be his own success
or Gaffney will never have a more
worthy and competant PostMaster,
nor will she have one that will he
more courteous and attentive or more
universally respected.
