An immense crowd wgs present, it being estimated at from 15,000 to 20,000. .Mr. Bryan spoke for about thirty minutes and his every utterance was applauded. Mis speech was devoid of sarcasm or abuse for his opponents and full of argument for his cause, ile is a graceful and ilucnt speaker. Those who had an idea that they were iroi"g to hear an anarchistic r r socialistic address w-rc disappointed, as no ut terance of his could be so distorted as to convoy the idea that he was en deavoring to array class against class. He simply put forth the Democratic proposition that alter due considera tion he had concluded that free silver at 10 to 1 would benefit the greatest number of the people of the i'nited States and, therefore ho was for the greatest good to the greatest number. That was his deduction, and he asked no man to vote for him who did not believe that the cause he represented was a just one and that ho was per fectly sincere in its advocacy. Mr. Bryan has a striking personal ity and truth and honor are depicted in his every utterance and gesture. We want to see him inaugurated next March. . -*•!*- . — A Sad Death. It is with sadness that we record the death of our worthy townsman, Mr. Wiley W. Hayes, which occurred last Friday afternoon in this city at his home on Logan street after a long illness, which lie bore with the pa tience and submission of a true Chris tian. He was buried at Providence church last Saturday in the presence of a large collection of his sorrowing friends. The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. B. 1*. Robertson, assisted by Rev. C- F- Robertson of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Hays has lived here a number of years and was a most popular shoemaker and had so conducted him self as to have the confidence and esteem of the whole city. He con nected himself with the Baptist church some years ago and lived a most consistent life and died rejoic ing in ins faith. He leaves a highly esteemed widow and several children who have our sincere sympathy. May the Husband of the widow and the Father of the fatherless be with them.
