Chester, S. 0.. May 18.—Tliora \vas a sensation here when the fact that County Treasurer John 15. McFad- den, who has held the ollico for 10 years, .and who has been noted for being the Jirst treasurer in tiro ^tate to settio with , the oomptrollor general, had boon, for five years, engaged in systematically defrauding the t:txpayors of the county. A few days ago one or two taxpayers ascertained, by carrying their receipts to the county auditor, that they bad paid more than the returns called for. They went immediately to the treasu rer. who paid back the overcharge wli m the supposed mistake was pointed nut to him. The parties went away satis fied. but the rumor got abroad that something was wrong, and taxpayers from all parts of the comity Hocked to town and presented their receipts to the auditor; and in nearly every case it was ascertained that an overcharge had been ‘ made. This, of course, caused great ex citement, and it was ascertained that these irregularities had been syst emati cally carried on for live years. Mr. McFadden was. up to the day of the discovery, the sflongest man politi cally in the county. Ho had served pearly four terms of four years e;lch as treasurer ami was considered invinci ble. He has confessed his embezzle ment, and is prostrated at his homo with anxiety and remorse. The feeling tVr him is one of universal sympathy. The trouble is altogether between him and the taxpayers. Bond in the amount of Cl,000 was given by his friends and he is now out on bail to appear at the Juno term of court. His condition, physical and • mental, is such that there are doubts of his recovery. A question has b< “n raised as to the liability of his bonds men for the amount that the taxpay n*s have been defrauded of and the opinions ’ of legal men differ on the point.
