GENERAL CONGLOMERATION OF NEWS ITEMS OF LOCAL IN TEREST. PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS. Some Short, Some Shorter and all Too Short for a Heading, Yet None Too Short to Mention. An error in last week’s paper made the hog law read l.'»0 feet instead of 100. Read it again and understand it. The stockholders of the Cherokee Falls Manufacturing Company held their annual meeting at tho mill yes terday. Geo. Kelly, an employee of the Mill, was before Mayor Wood Tues day for raising a disturbance. He was was released with a reprimand. Rev. II. 1*. Robertson will on next Sunday morning treat bis congrega tion with reminiscences of bis recent trip to the Southern Raptist Conven tion. Don’t neglect to come in Saturday and join the democratic club. If you find it impossible to come yourself have a reliable friend to give in your name. Rusincss these days continue good when the fact is taken into consider- tion that the large majority of the planters are sticking pretty close to the plow. A change from paying by the day to paying by the cut has caused a strike at Ibc Lockhart Shoals mill and as a consequence over three hun dred looms are idle. Smith Cook is I lie happiest man in town this week. Its a fine boy and gives promise of making the Cook at tend to things pertaining to the pan try ns he grows older. The State Teachers’ Association of South Carolina will be held at Rock Hill from June B0 to July 0. inclu sive. The rate from Gaffney will be about $2.50 for the round trip. There is some talk among the pro gressive young men of the city of or ganizing a social club. Inquiry shows that all that is necessary is to have some one take the lead. Who will do it? After being in the dark several weeks, occasioned by the lump burn ing out and having to be sent off for repairs, the electric light at Carroll it Stacy’s bank corner, is again in working order. Business man is your business rep resented in this paper? The paper of a town is looked upon as an index to the town and no index is complete without every business is represented in it. Get in tho procession and go with the progressive. Rev. .1. 1). Grout, of tho Methodist church, will preaeh’a special sermon to children next Sunday morning at 11 o’clock. All childreW are invited to be present nnd the children of the church are especially urged to attend. Mr. Crout is an able man and be is never happier than when talking to the little folks. What about a Fourth of July cele bration? Have you forgotten the glorious Fourth of last year? Every patriotic citizen should begin to lay his plans for a great day. Merchants and planters and bankers and me chanics all should put on their think ing caps nnd study how the day may be made brighter and pleasanter for each and every ope. Hnye you registered? That’s tho important question how. Wo would not have yon go crazy or make a fool of yourself concerning politics but this one thing we would like to see; “Every tn»u in this section regis tered.” There might como n time when tho importance of this matter will dawn upon you, The Sunbeam Society under direc tion of Mrs. C. E. Robertson will have a May festival at the Gaffney Maleand Female Seminary on the 22nd at 8:30 p. m. Tho feature of tho occasion will he tho crowning of tho (juecn nnd platting of pole nnd addresses by members of Gaffney’s brightest little ones. Admission ten cents. Re- Ireshments will bo sold for tho bene fit of tho society. A bicycle club is soon to bo organ ized here. There are more cycles In Gaffney than any town of its size in tho State and the list is growing rapidly. The large number of lady cyclist is noticnble and they make a beautiful panorama in the early evening as, with pretty costumes anil shining lanterns and ringing gongs, they spin up and down our pretty avenues and streets which are bril liantly lighted by electricity. . ^ G. C. Spencer's house near Dhiy- tonville was entered Saturday night, May 9th,by a thief who carried away fifty pounds of flour and all of Mr. Spencer’s moat, some meal and a pis tol. The family was at Mr. Spencer's fathers on a visit, The thief is at largo but they think they have a clue. Tho thief entered by prizing off somo weather-boarding and got tholr hand through to the latch on the inside of the dinning room door. - • • The Story Denied A report was sent to the Colum bia State last week (/neernlng tho disappearance of a - hoy from tho premises of J. T. Wood and that foul play was suspected. Mr. Wood come In Saturday wd brought affi davits to the effect that |ho boy was alive and well nnfl that luvhad been seen by nuinofoiA parties, £|jU8 deny ing the htory of Vjl play. Mr. Wilkins reported the need of rain in bis section. H. A. Tate, of Webster, was among those who paid The Ledger a visit last Saturday. Jessie Sanders, of Wilkinsville, was in the city last Saturday. Mr. San ders is one of the first Ledgerites. He began taking tho paper when it first started and lias remained in the ranks ever since. Our efficient postmaster, T. II. Lit tlejohn. is off on a short vacation to bis old home near Webster. Tohe is not only one of the best men in town but he is one of tho best postmasters in the service of Fnelc Sam today. During his absence the ever accom modating Larry Sneed, Mr. Little john’s able assistant, will have cha rge. Mrs. Sallie Torrence, one of the l^uren City’s most charming citizens, is here visiting relatives and friends. Mrs. Torrence is at the home of tier sister, Mrs. Carrie Petty, on Freder ick street. Robert Roundtree, of iho Tucapnu mills, was in the city Sunday and Monday. Rev. R. 1*. Robertson has returned from the Southern Raptist Conven tion, which, by the way, is the larg est religious body in tho world. He reports having had a harmonious con clave of great and good men and grand work was accomplished in every phase for the Master's dory. A church reaps a reward in multiform ways when it sends the faithful pas tor on such a profitable run off. Sheriff Dean was among the visi tors to the city Saturday. His busi ness was to look after bis fences and see ‘‘the boys who wore the grey.” George H. Rayno, of the firm of Carey, Rayno & Smith, the New York commission merchants of the Gaff ney Manufacturing Co., and J. X. Shiebly, a prominent banker of Pro vidence, R. I., were the guests of II. I). Wheat last Saturday. John Smith, a prominent merchant of Cowpens, was in tho city last Tues day. Hollmnn Smith, father of W. H. Smith, of this city, is here visiting Ids son and other relatives. Dr. Bonner was nt the county seat Tuesday on business. Miss Martha Davis, of Clarksville, Ark., is the guest of F. G, Briggs and family. Respect Wclel Mrited, The First Baptist Church, colored, has introduced an anomalous fashion in our religious world. A much ad mired and valued lady friend of The Ledger was especially Invited to meet with this church Sunday after noon as a special attention. Speak ing of the occasion she said.' '“About eight hundred, or perhaps morejof our colored friends greeted us with a warm welcome. On inquiry, why sueli a crowd? tho reply was. ‘We are taking up a collection.’ The reply sot my thoughts in agitation and my muse whispered ‘O that example would stir up others and hasten good effects.’ The church lias been trying to raise a bell-tower and make somo architectural improvements. Twelve solicitors representing the twelve tribes of Israel stood in front of the pulpit, importunate but mod estly asking help; each patriarch try ing to be the most successful. The spirit of emulation was harmonious and caused at times subdued and al lowable mirth. We understand that tho 'beloved Joseph’ verily wore tho ‘coat of many colors’ and won the ‘first prize,’ also that over one hun dred dollars Inis been collected. All honor to the self-denying, Unselfish, generous man and woman who from toil and penury drop their hard-earn ed mites into the treasury of the Lord, and abundant commendation on tho religious tone that character izes the colored people of Gaffney.” —» ' ■' *---- —- Your Physical Condition Needs attention at this time. If you are tired, weak and nervous, it is clear that your blood is impure, nnd without doubt there 1ms been too much over-work or strain on brain and body. The course of treatment for such a condition ly plain and simple. Tho blood must first be purified so that tho nervous system, nnd In fact all the organs will bo fed upon pure blood. Intelli gent people without number have testified that tho bust blood purifier, nerve tonic and strength imparting medicine is Hood’s Sarsaparilla. Nervousness, loss of sleep aiul gen eral debility all vanish when Hood’s Sarsaparilla is pe^istontly taken; in a word, hcal^lund happiness follow after Hood's Sar saparilla. Index to New Advertisements. Do you hear in mini Ledger ad vertisers when you g.i l«> punjiase goods? If not, why not? They will certainly treat you right. They in vite your trade and make a hid for it. I so a little judgement in Ibis matter. Does it not stand to reason that tho firm who asks for your trade through an advertisement is the firm that wants it? But you say they just ad vertise to catch people and make money. Of course they do. If peo ple did not read advertisements tho merchants would not advertise. Wo do not publish the advertisements of swindlers. Wo have never published hut oix?swindlers advertisement nnd then we wore duped ourselves. That taught us a lesson. Since then wo make careful inquiry into tho char acter of every advertiser who wants to do business witli us and if he is found to be tin least bit shady wo do not publish his ad. Every man who advertises in this paper must be an honest man, therefore you are per fectly safe in doing business with i Ledger advertisers and we invite i your attention to our ad columns. Davis, a prominent liv eryman and merclmiD., of Goshen, Ya., has this to say on tho subject of rheumatism; “I take pleasure in recommending Cluunbcrlnin’s Pain Balm for rheumatism, as I know from personal experience that it will do all that is claimed for it. A year ago this spring my brother was laid up in bed with inllumatory rheuma tism and suffered intensely. The first application of Chamberlain’s Pain Balm eased the pain and the use of one bottle completely cured him. Merger, May 11.—In last week’s Ledger J. L. 8., took his gloves oft to Flaw Picker, to which wo all say amen. Ho was getting too bad nnd if ho had not got ton It from Etta •lane some one else would have done him up. He’s too irreverent for so sacred a subject. Living where he does and knowing the double life that many would-be Christians are living, has spoiled Flaw. It has made him a misanthropist so fur us the church is concerned, and he feels most keenly what ho thinks is hypoerncy. Rut if Ephraim is joined to his idols let him alone, nnd if the ministers seem o’er zealous as to their creeds let them alone, for no one knows the motive that prompts it. All tho noted leaders, both in church and State, have been bold, earnest and agressive men, besides, it is taking to ourselves that which belongs to another, and it is out of our jurisdic tion. No doubt Flaw is a reformer at heart and wants people to do bet ter and the reason he does not go in to tho church himself is on account of the bad company therein. But there he makes another mistake. A man of such zeal as n reformer ought to be in the church and help guide It. Better live in the church with him a little while than in hell with him all the time. Let the people believe in their creeds and work for iliein. Al most any form of Godliness beats none, besides if you go to spreading it out to suit every body it gets too thin and don’t hold water. But I must hush or Flaw will think I am after him which I am not. We are told to let ever man abide In the calling wherein he is called. If Flaw is a banjo picker sticK to it and maybe it will feed himjin this part of the vineyard. We are called‘'“wool hats’’ and “one gallus,” and it is feeding us. Pi.f.iuan. Cowpens News.
