Respect Wclel Mrited,
The First Baptist Church, colored,
has introduced an anomalous fashion
in our religious world. A much ad
mired and valued lady friend of The
Ledger was especially Invited to
meet with this church Sunday after
noon as a special attention. Speak
ing of the occasion she said.' '“About
eight hundred, or perhaps morejof
our colored friends greeted us with a
warm welcome. On inquiry, why
sueli a crowd? tho reply was. ‘We are
taking up a collection.’ The reply
sot my thoughts in agitation and my
muse whispered ‘O that example
would stir up others and hasten
good effects.’ The church lias been
trying to raise a bell-tower and make
somo architectural improvements.
Twelve solicitors representing the
twelve tribes of Israel stood in front
of the pulpit, importunate but mod
estly asking help; each patriarch try
ing to be the most successful. The
spirit of emulation was harmonious
and caused at times subdued and al
lowable mirth. We understand that
tho 'beloved Joseph’ verily wore tho
‘coat of many colors’ and won the
‘first prize,’ also that over one hun
dred dollars Inis been collected. All
honor to the self-denying, Unselfish,
generous man and woman who from
toil and penury drop their hard-earn
ed mites into the treasury of the
Lord, and abundant commendation
on tho religious tone that character
izes the colored people of Gaffney.”

Your Physical Condition
Needs attention at this time. If
you are tired, weak and nervous,
it is clear that your blood is impure,
nnd without doubt there 1ms been
too much over-work or strain on
brain and body. The course of
treatment for such a condition ly
plain and simple. Tho blood must
first be purified so that tho nervous
system, nnd In fact all the organs
will bo fed upon pure blood. Intelli
gent people without number have
testified that tho bust blood purifier,
nerve tonic and strength imparting
medicine is Hood’s Sarsaparilla.
Nervousness, loss of sleep aiul gen
eral debility all vanish when Hood’s
Sarsaparilla is pe^istontly taken;
in a word, hcal^lund happiness
follow after Hood's Sar
saparilla.
Index to New Advertisements.
Do you hear in mini Ledger ad
vertisers when you g.i l«> punjiase
goods? If not, why not? They will
certainly treat you right. They in
vite your trade and make a hid for it.
I so a little judgement in Ibis matter.
Does it not stand to reason that tho
firm who asks for your trade through
an advertisement is the firm that
wants it? But you say they just ad
vertise to catch people and make
money. Of course they do. If peo
ple did not read advertisements tho
merchants would not advertise. Wo
do not publish the advertisements of
swindlers. Wo have never published
hut oix?swindlers advertisement nnd
then we wore duped ourselves. That
taught us a lesson. Since then wo
make careful inquiry into tho char
acter of every advertiser who wants
to do business witli us and if he is
found to be tin least bit shady wo do
not publish his ad. Every man who
advertises in this paper must be an
honest man, therefore you are per
fectly safe in doing business with
i Ledger advertisers and we invite
i your attention to our ad columns.

(Correspondence of Tho ledger.)
Merger, May 11.—In last week’s
Ledger J. L. 8., took his gloves oft
to Flaw Picker, to which wo all say
amen. Ho was getting too bad nnd
if ho had not got ton It from Etta
•lane some one else would have done
him up. He’s too irreverent for so
sacred a subject. Living where he
does and knowing the double life that
many would-be Christians are living,
has spoiled Flaw. It has made him
a misanthropist so fur us the church
is concerned, and he feels most
keenly what ho thinks is hypoerncy.
Rut if Ephraim is joined to his idols
let him alone, nnd if the ministers
seem o’er zealous as to their creeds
let them alone, for no one knows the
motive that prompts it. All tho
noted leaders, both in church and
State, have been bold, earnest and
agressive men, besides, it is taking
to ourselves that which belongs to
another, and it is out of our jurisdic
tion. No doubt Flaw is a reformer
at heart and wants people to do bet
ter and the reason he does not go in
to tho church himself is on account
of the bad company therein. But
there he makes another mistake. A
man of such zeal as n reformer ought
to be in the church and help guide It.
Better live in the church with him a
little while than in hell with him all
the time. Let the people believe in
their creeds and work for iliein. Al
most any form of Godliness beats
none, besides if you go to spreading
it out to suit every body it gets too
thin and don’t hold water. But I
must hush or Flaw will think I am
after him which I am not. We are
told to let ever man abide In the
calling wherein he is called. If Flaw
is a banjo picker sticK to it and
maybe it will feed himjin this part of
the vineyard. We are called‘'“wool
hats’’ and “one gallus,” and it is
feeding us. Pi.f.iuan.
