Chattanooga. Jan. 2fl.—The Trades man has received its reports of indus trial and business conditions for the week ending Jan. JS, in all parts of tho southern states. A slight increase in the price of cotton is being used as an inducement t > planters to increase the acreage. From present indications the crop will be mu *h larger thau that of last year. Fertilizers are now iu active demand. The iron men seem to be sat isfied with the condition of the market, as there has been no further lessening of pig iron quotations, and the demand continues to be fair. Southern lumber operators give most encouraging reports each week. It seems as if a heavy trade may be expected during the spring and summer. Reports that cotton mills are turning out goods in excess of the de mand are not confirmed in the south, where the mills continue to find a ready market. Prices, while low, are steady. Among important new industries in corporated or established in the south ern states during the week are: The Buckingham Mining and Milling com pany of Richmond, Ya., capital $100,- 000; the William Schuff & Sons tannery at Louisville, Ky., to cost $80,000; the T. R. Thomas Lumber company, capi tal $50,000, of Prescott, Ark.; tho Inter national Creosoting and Construction company of Galveston, Tex., with $50.- 000 capital; tho Texas Oak Leather com pany of Tyler. Tex., capital $40,000, and the International House Construction company of Houston, Tex,, capital $15,- 000. Reports of new textile mills include a $150,000 cotton mill at Charleston, S ! C., a 12,000 -piiulle mill at Roanoke Rapids, Va.. a *50,000 mill at Charlotte, N. C., ami tilers at Rome and Sparta. Ga., and Pittsboro and Winston, N. C, Then* an* also reported bicycle works at Little R'jck, Ark., brick works at Fitzgerald, Ga., a canning factory at Hairodsburg, Ky.. and a coal mining and coke company at Thacker, W. Va. | Cotton delinting works are reported as to be built at Wilmington, N. C.. gas works at Marietta, Ga., an ice factory at Miami, Fia., and machine works at DeLaud, Fla. Among tho enlargements of indus trial plants are: Machine works at Birmingham, Ala., cotton mills at Bir mingham, Ala., Coleridge, N. C., and Lynchburg, Va., aud lumber mills at Rome, Ga. Tho new buildings of the week include a $10,000 auditorium at Birmingham, Ala., a $25,000 business block at Asheville, N. C., and one to cost $20,000 at Wheeling, W. Chinese Get In Their Work on the Island of Java—Many Arrests. Tacoma, Wash., Jan. 29.—The latest advices from China tell of the uttering byChine.se forgers on the island of Java of $3,000,000 of Java bank notes. In order to get notes accepted forged no tary acceptances were placed on them. Already £>> >0,000 of forged and dis counted n<.tcs have been discovered and many prominent Chinese merchants have been piaced under arrest, includ ing Captain Chin, one of the wealthiest Chinamen in Java. It is believed by the police that the forgeries were com pleted in Singapore. Kwee Che Sop, an agent of China, now a resident of Sourabaya, and a band of native Ethirs have been ar rested. Soe has confessed to having committed the forgeries aud implicates many others, all of whom insist they are innocent. The forgeries were discovered through a lawyer named Gericke, who is high ly praised by the bankers and popul.-p-e. One house, that of Ten Kim Tjiang, discounted 300,000 pounds of forged notes.
