Having no particularly pressing work at hand and being promised a pleasant ride, Tin: I.kix;i:u hastened to accept the invitation of Dr. Smith. The (Jod of Sunshine was never more resplendent. He shown forth in all his glory, giving warmth to the earth and caressing the growing vegetation on every side. The (iod of Vegeta tion and the Dod of Nature seemed to vie with each other in their strug gle to eclipse the (iod of Sunshine. But then we remembered that the one great (Jod was (Iod of all. A more perfect day could not have been wished for. The ride had not progresssed very far into the country before we met our enterprising county supervisor, Mr. Lemmon, and his able assistant, Township Commissioner R. M. .lolly. They were out inspect ing the roads. After exchange of pleasantries we drove on. Not a great way on we eame to an inviting i well which seemed to say “Come and ; taste of my thirst-quenching quail- j ties,” and we did so, while two horny-handed tillers of the soil enter tained us with their merry clatter. Further on we passed a cheerful cob- I bier and his merry crew on their way ' Lithe river where they expected to i make captives of the finny tribe, and : still further on we were passed by | two men, evidently made merciless j by a too intimate acquaintanceship with John Barley Corn, for they were unmercifully driving their horse. ; Finally we reached the hank of the j beautiful winding broad, only to find j that we could not get «»' r t" 1 "' | rtC ems, for the wrong l across. .“so hitching our faithful | stead to a water-oak on the river | bank we hailed the boatman on the 1 ‘Mother side-” Ife proved to be a diminutive “little man” of about thirteen summers. When asked if he could put us across in safe! v he replied with an air of assurance, “Oh yes; ’ and he did “put us across with all the grace of an old mariner. The doctor and I had a walk of about a mile and a half after we reached t he other side of the river, but the pict uresqueness of the scenery had the effect of making the distance seem short. We soon reached the store of the Cherokee Falls Man ufacturing Company. In the private ollicc in the rear of the store were de t he mill. After a short stay, during which we were enter tained by diseu-sims of recent “so- (dely events, 1 he home iflfiod upon a t hrec-fourt ii: reached the await ing our we received direct ions of the patient, which ridge on 1 he island some : of a mile beyond. [Correspondence of Tin: Lkdukk. | Kit a .1 am:, S. .lime 17.—Last week your correspondent traveled around a good deal and heard a num ber of compliments paid Till. Lkihiuk by men, and women too, who are compeh nt judgi s of a good paper. I find that ii is becoming a favorite with the people on aerounf of ils not mixing up with politics, which, they say, is fast dying out. If I am to judge from what I sec and hear the paper has a flattering prospect ahead and I hope ils realization to the- full est extent is near at hand. The North Pacolet Sunday School convention will meet at Klbethel next Sabbath, 23d, at 10 a.m. and all persons friendly to the cause are invited to attend. The ladies espec ially are invited to come with filled baskets. We expect to make it one of the most enthusiastic meetings of the convention held during the six years of its existence. We hope every school in the bounds of the convention will he represented. (Juite a hail storm passed along the Pacolet section of this township Iasi Thursday, 1 learn. Not much damage was done that I know of. Many farmer arc* turning their at tention to planting peas which they say are the most reliable and paying crop we can raise. For a special invitation to attend a picnic at Lockhart Shoals on the 1th of July, your correspondent is very thankful to those who ere disposed to remember him. 11! he there if possible, or I'll send I* law Piek<*r if he’ll go and I want the good people of that section to show him that they are not tliekindof peopleh struck in other parts of I nion county, about one fourth of whom he found read Thk Lkdokii. I understand that Mr. <«i!es Hill has found full grown and matured cuckled-burs in his corn field. That looks like he has not done his duty towards keeping them down. Flaw Picker is hard to satisfy, it done him (if any) in a previous correspondence by placing him among the roughs at church, (which lie says is false). I take otT my hat and ask his pardon. From iiis own statement i draw my conclusion, and il 1 misrepresented him I am sorry for it and hope he will n.>t hi* the occasion of my doing so anymore. Had lie just stated that Mrs. Picker was with him I would have known better than to have placed him in the devil’s pew among the “rilf rail ’ of the congre gation, (unless he had stated in his letter that there was neither setting nor standing room in it anywhere else.) Hu follows that old Adomic style of laying all tie* blame on Mrc. Picke r for Ids being s*> late at chureh that day. Why didn’t In* start sooner? I don t blame Mrs. Picker for takitig t ime to adjust her toilet so as to appear tidy and respectable. She didn’t goto ohui'ch to pick flaws with other people like he did or to give them an opportunity to find any with iier and she don't intend that they shall do so. She is a lady of excellent, taste and line sense, al though (like some others down this way) she did not show a great amount of either in selecting a hus band for liersc If.
