May ‘J7.—I re gret very much to learn that Mr. W flit a/ii Itlaekmie was hitteu l>y a inafl dhj; a fi-wdaysa^o near liis home at Turkey ereek in Vorkeounty. He is an honest , hard working poor man with some small children. From what I can learn the skin was slightly broken and it is hoped that the wound will not prove serious. He was raised in this country and has many friends here who sympathize with him. This is a beautiful Spring morning and vegetation is much revived by the gentle spring showers since tho cold spell of ten days ago. Cotton has died out in many places and corn turned yelllow. Wheat and oats ..re looking very well. Mrs. William (loing, of .Alt. Joy, fell and hurt her arm badly one day last week. She is get t ing better now. The Smart - and Smith boys, of Hopewell, have killed only 2f» minks since the 1st of January and they say it is a poor season for the business. Flows were stopped last Friday and Saturday in conscipn nee of the rain, j 1 They can begin by tomorrow. Crops are growing linely just nov stands are generally pretty good both of cotton and corn, especially the latter. The “means grass along the River and other water stream-, and in many places on the uplands is !u\- urient and makes an excellent forage for stock. [Correspondence of Tin-: Ledgkk.] (’i.akicnck, S. C. May 2a.—\Ye were in the neighborhood of Tryon, N. (’.. a few days last week, where we saw the largest onion bed that we have ever seen. It contained about one and a quarter acres. It was planted to make sots. We also saw an Irish potatoe patch in which there had been planted seventeen bushels of potatoes. There was about one and a half aero of land. We once heard a man say that he had seen corn, somewhere in the west, of which one ear would make two full meals for a horse. They gave a horse one ear at night and the next morn- ning they turned it, over and let him eat oil the ot her side. Of course we didn’t, believe it. But now wo are prepared to almost believe anything in regard to corn after seeing some that was grown by Adolphas New man. of Tryon, N. C. It certainly was the largest eared corn that we have ever seen. Mr. Newman in formed us Hint it was not an unusual tiling for him to select thirty fine ears of corn that would make a bushel and that it only takes an av erage of from fifty to sixty ears to the bushel. We brought one ear of it home with us. It contained twenty- six rows with forty-four grains to the row, making a total of 1111 grains to the ear. We heard of four mad dogs in our community last week. James Pon der’s dog vent mad last week and his wife was biten by it. He produced a mudstone and applied it to the wound which adhered for some time, but the lady is very uneasy about it, fearing that the stone will not counteract the poisonous effects of the bite. Mrs. Trcccy Allen and daughter, Miss Etta, of Tryon, N. C., spent last week visiting relatives in our seetion. The frost last week together with- the cool weather has done consider able damage to our crops. Cotton is very badly injured. It has been dic ing at a terrible rate. But we hope there will he a stand left after all. Master Rufus Staton has been right sick with catarrhal fever. w. w. w. • -*•» • Bucklen’s Arnica Salve. C., May. 27.—As I stopped in the shade of a largo oak the ot her day to let my horse rest, for it was an awful hot day and the sweat was running off her in torrents and I was pretty warm myself, I pulled off my bat, and as I did so the breeze from just beyond the creek funned my heated brow and as the birds sang in the valley below made it seem almost a paradise. I noticed how the flesh of my animal was de creasing from bard labor. I said to myself, she will soon be the poorest horse in the world, and that put me to studying what was the poorest thing in the world. And dear coun try and city girls here is what I de cided on, that those of you whom are not taught to work are the poorest in the world. Thrrc are thousands of you. Rich parents have petted you and you have been taught to despise labor and to depend upon others for a living and arc perfectly helpless. The most forlorn girls and women be long to this case. It is the duty of parents to protect their daughters from thisdeplorulilecondition. Flicy do them a great wrong if they neglect it. Every daughter should he taught to earn her own living. The rich as well as the poor require this training. The wheel of fortune rolls swiftly around. The rich arc likely to be come poor and the poor rich. Skill added to labor is no disadvantage to t he rich and is indeplornble to the poor. Well-to-do parents must edu cate their daughters to work. No re form is more important than this. g. i.. s.
