C., May 21.—The smouldering ruinsof seven of llonnetts- ville’s principal places of business, all of them handsome ‘brick structures, is all that remains of the* largest lire in the history of the town. About half past one o'clock yesterday the alai *n was given and in less than three hours 8.’i0,000 worth of property was in ashes. The lire commenced in the second story of Mr. U. \V. Carroll's handsome Jewelry store at Darlington street, and lu a short while the whole block was in a blaze. It became evident that the only hope of saving much property in the west end of the town was, if possi ble, to stop the lire at Mr. .1. M. Jack- Son's store. This store is divided from the others by an ally about lifteen feet witlc. The building was soon covered with men ready to light the liery de mon and by their heroic elTorts at least 850,000 worth of property was saved. Too much cannot be said in praise of the men who thus bravely fought the flames, especially when it is remem bered that the town has no water works facilities, no fire engine, not even a hand engine, for one hour lht“\ worked with an energy that was as tounding ami at last succeeded in stop ping the flames. There is no doubt in t he minds of the majority that the line. A few days ago Constable I'cneh disobeye I United States Judge Simon ton's order of injunction in the case, he having held that no one could interfere with liquor shipped into the state t hat the law was unconstitutional in so far as it interfered with interstate commerce. He was arrested and put in jail for con tempt. Attorney (Jeneral itarber left here yesterday’ for Washington to make npplieutiou before the United States supreme court, for a writ of habeas cor pus. The state expects by this method to get the entire case heard bv the United States supreme court in the next twenty days. Ivin ley MacArthur, a young Eng\uu. man, was sent to jail yesterday for as- sault and battery on his young wife. ' MacArthur came here froip lirooklyn recently and established a monthly periodical called the “Florida Maga zine.'' He seemed to have plenty of money and was quite popular until stories that he treated Ins young wife inhumanly got abroad. Last night Mrs. MacArthur ran out in her night clothes screaming that her husband was trying to kill her. Neighbors took her in and today’ had her husband ar rested. Testimony in court showed that MacArthur had treated his wife with shocking cruelty. Mrs. McArthur testified that her husband beat her several times and knocked her in the head. Hie also said that it was a fre- quent occurrence for him to coma to the city and before leaving lock up all the food in the house and be gone all day. leaving her without anything to eat. Mrs. Mae Arthur is small in stat ure and very slender. She was very’ much distressed during the time she was giving her testimony at times bursting into tears. She is only 1S> years of age and was formally Miss Louise Hunt, her family’ residing at 22'(! Pacific street, lirooklyn.
