Well, Monday morning came, I arose bright and eariy, breakfasted, (didn’t eat mueli oitlier) and went for my pony and eart which the manag ing editor had secured for me. \Y lien I arrived at the house tin landlord directed me to the stable tOealehout the pony, something I had never done before, but ! picked up heart and laughed at Flaw I'ieker for being such an ignorant coward and went on to the stalde expecting nothing else lull that I woult get my head amputated by the pony rear ends, orelse. loose some of in\ minor parts from the effects of a bite, but I soon found that she was very gentle. I believe she comprehended my cowardly looks and stuck her head towards me to re ceive the hits and thus relieve me of the painful necessity of having to go into the stalde where she was. I got her bridled and after using a great amount of head-work i managed to get her harness on her and on asking for the carf ! was informed that ii was at the shop. I went to the shop and got the blacksinit h to working on it and by the time he had it fixed i ,vas ready w ith my sample copies, re ceipt book and ail else 1 thought I would need—the weather was too pretty, as i thought, to take an over coat or an umbrella.—so i started oil' on my journey, i had often heard it said that it was a poor business that wouldn't pay expenses so I didn’t take a cent with me. i bet 1 hailed forty people before i got a subscriber, and 1 took him in on time as ! knew lie was good pay. It was getting close on to dinner time when I called at a widow lady's house*, near iiraytonville. on my way to Etta .lane postolljce, as that was my destination, i found her to h** worrying over her sewing machine which wouldn i sew. As I went on I tackled everybody : rnet, but in vain. They would te'i me that they had already subscribed, or that they didn’t have any money, and of course when they would tel! me that, it would knock a blue spot on me every time, knowing that J only had fifteen cents left to pay for toy pony another lunch. As for my self I was so blue i had given up all hopes. But i canvassed that road pretty well to litta Jane. When I reached that place i yelled out: “ilellow!” . In answer to my appeal a one-leg ged gentleman emerged from the mist of darkness, for it was dark as a stuck of black cats, and then in his pres ence I introduced myself as Flaw Ticker. He grasped my hand and and gave me the “Correspondent Sons of Rest” grip. Well sir, the blue spots disappeared on me like when the measles goes in on one. I knew that I belonged to that same order, and as the fair sex ol that com munity seemed to he very industri ous I knew that the order was some what Hush, tinancially, and i further knew, that the doors of the order was open to me as long as its funds held out. The one-legged man who greeted me was Mr. J. L. Strain. If Mrs. Ann \\ aters iiad said he was a “model man” instead of Flaw Ticker she would have hit the nail sipiareon the head.
