A RT^ iifinf Beecher fa reported m enjlig •' ‘ 4 Xhfa greet nation was divided by an invisible line, morally visible enough, on both eideaV which the North and Sooth has stood in bloody antagonism for five terrible years. In my own judgment, when I consider human na ture, when I consider that a proud peo ple have seen themselves emptied out of power, their political existence almost annihiliated, their property swept out of their hands as by a consumin'.: flame, the ascendency of the despised slavo es tablished over them by what was to him a foreign arm, I should not have won dered if there had been ten times the re A ■ . J instance that there has been te recen- sirucirVe measures. Never in history has a people borne so 4 much with so much patience, gallantry and patriotism —a spectacle of moral grandeur and of substantial good intent in those who lure bceu so tornfically Icourgcd wlrch is without parallel. The spirit which would set the North igainst the West, the Off- mans against tho old Puritans or the Vuritans Against the Germans, the whites against the blacks or the blacks against the whites is .not only politically crim inal, but it is absolutely subversive of the fbadomcntnl instincts of humanity. HorribU Story from Mexico. Iiast week, in Chihuahua, a woman went into a shoemaker’s shop in front of his dwelling and was measured for a pair of shoes. Tho son of Crispin said to the woman 1 : “You have a very pretty foot." *• Do you think so ?" said she. He re plied: ‘‘Yes; that is the prettiest foot in Mexico." The woman was to come bock the next day and leave one dollar, when the shoes weic to bo commenced. The shoemaker's wife, hearing all, said noth ing. 1 The nett dsy" _ 1ho shoemalier was out when the woman with the pret ty foot called, according to agreement, and the wife got her into the back room and stabbed her to death. then cut a steak ourofttrcfcload woman's log and packed the body under tho bed. The shoemaker came home and ate his dinner. The wife asked him how he liked the meat. He answerd that “ it was the best he had ever eaten. ” The wife then told him he had eaten a part of the protticst leg in Mexioo. ” lie asked her what ahje meant. She showed him the body under the bed, and made a dash at him with a knife, but he escaped end ran to the Pa (ado aed told tho Judge what happened' The Judge sum moned a guard of soldiers and went to the houso. lie asked the wife if she had committed the mnrdcr, and when she answered yes and attempted to justify the aot he ordered her to be shot ou the spot by the soldiers, and his orders were promptly obeyed.—Logausport Journal. '1.1 » ' Bribed by a KIm. A temperance lecturer who lay been eaVly experience in Michigan. Previ ous to bis arrival in a small town where he intended to do some work, tho boys had agreed among themselves to go to the meeting, but not to sign the pledge. He appealed in vain for recruits in the temperance cause. Not a man would move. At this stage of the proceedings tho belle of the town sprang to her feet aud cried out: “ Boys, this is really too bad. Won’t you sign the pledge'?” Not a Mttl moVed from his sent'. Again the fair belle appealed to the men’s better na ture, but it was of no avail ; ihcyiiad promised they wouldn’t sign. Finaly the lady said : “ Boys I’ll kiss the first man who Signs the pledge. At this juncture up r jumped n tall backwoodsman and drawingly exclaimed: “ Siss. I’m ycr huckleberry. Whar’s ycr pledge ?” The brave girl kissed the fellow, and the cheering which followed made the build ing rattle. This incident broke the ice, and before th& reformer had left the U>wn nearly every one had donned the ribbon. ^ ' ■ y A Man-Katinu Horse.—Wc have Nlowtlae PoImbKhc. A rather unusual case of nicotine poisoning occurred lately iu a Parisian suburb. The victim, a man in the prime of life, had been cleaning his pipe with a chop knife. ^Vith this ho acci dentally out one of his fingers subse quently, but os the wound was of a triv ial riaturc he paid no heel to it. Five or six hour*.later, however, the cut fin ger grew paiuful and became much swollen. The inflammation rapidly spread to the arm and shoulder, the pa tient aufTering such intense pain that he WM obliged to betake himself to his bed. Medical assisufece wks called in and or dinary rerqcdlfca applied • ineffectually. Tfaa sick man, questioned as to the moaner in which be had eut himself, ex plained the use to which the pocket knife had been applied, adding that ho had o- mitted to wipe k after eleaning bis pipe. ^ jthc apparent mystery which aurrouoded the case w»s thus cleared tip, and as tho pat ient’s state had become alarming he was tarried to the hospital. Upon bis admis- sios, the doctors attached to the iaelitu- taop declared Hut in the immediate am putatioa of the arm lay the only hope of caving the-patieot’s life. The poisoned member was therefore amputated; but iu spite of the promptitude with which the* operation - was performed, the mao-lies in so precarious a condition duHbe chances of his reoeVcry are said to be alight .—From the Parisian. .-r t tl It has finally become a well estab lished fact that no people in the world - ever prospered who did not raise their ow'd supplies for tho necessities of life. A negro boy went into the same horse afterward aud was also set upon by it and pretty roughly used, and it was with difficulty lio was rescued. The horse was never known' to be vicions before, and its conduct could not be explainei. Ywung Coward wanted it killed, but nol&fng was don# about it.
