A temperance lecturer who lay been

he intended to do some work, tho boys
had agreed among themselves to go to
the meeting, but not to sign the pledge.
He appealed in vain for recruits in the
temperance cause. Not a man would
move. At this stage of the proceedings
tho belle of the town sprang to her feet
aud cried out: “ Boys, this is really too
bad. Won’t you sign the pledge'?” Not
a Mttl moVed from his sent'. Again the
fair belle appealed to the men’s better na

promised they wouldn’t sign. Finaly the
lady said : “ Boys I’ll kiss the first man
who Signs the pledge.
At this juncture
up r jumped n tall backwoodsman and
drawingly exclaimed: “ Siss. I’m ycr

brave girl kissed the fellow, and the
cheering which followed made the build

A rather unusual case of nicotine
poisoning occurred lately iu a Parisian
suburb. The victim, a man in the
prime of life, had been cleaning his pipe
with a chop knife. ^Vith this ho acci
dentally out one of his fingers subse
quently, but os the wound was of a triv
ial riaturc he paid no heel to it. Five
or six hour*.later, however, the cut fin
ger grew paiuful and became much
swollen. The inflammation rapidly
spread to the arm and shoulder, the pa
tient aufTering such intense pain that he
WM obliged to betake himself to his bed.
Medical assisufece wks called in and or

Tfaa sick man, questioned as to the
moaner in which be had eut himself, ex
plained the use to which the pocket knife
had been applied, adding that ho had o-
mitted to wipe k after eleaning bis pipe.
^ jthc apparent mystery which aurrouoded
the case w»s thus cleared tip, and as tho
pat ient’s state had become alarming he was
tarried to the hospital. Upon bis admis-
sios, the doctors attached to the iaelitu-
taop declared Hut in the immediate am
putatioa of the arm lay the only hope of
caving the-patieot’s life. The poisoned
member was therefore amputated; but iu

the people are apprehensive that the gen-
