Home of Garri son’s attacks on slavery and the slave market were so severe that bo was In dicted and convicted of “ gross, mali cious libel,” and sentenced to pay floe and cost*. Being unable to pay the costs he was committed to jail, where be was Imprisoned forty-nine days, until a merchant In York pal-1 hU floe and procured hte release. Be next attempted to found an anti slave ry Journal in Washington, but was un successful. The Liberator, which he Anally succeeded lb establishing In, Boston, bad a weakly infancy.
