In another portion of our columns
will be found an account of the death of
this veteran emancipationist.
Mr. Garrison has occupied too psom-
ieent a position in tho pofitrcaTmovc-
ments of tho last ijuartcr of a century to
require an extended notice of his lift
and actions from os. Our people are
sufficiently familiar with his teachings
•t© perpetuate his memory amongst
them. Bo belooged to the Becchcr-
Stowb school, only a little more so. He
pay hare bean a very earnest mnn in
bis convictions—aud considered himself
.« prophet sent from God to dectafc his
will to the American people, but, like
all enthusiasts and fanatics, he was car
ried away by his extreme views beyond
the precincts of Christian charity. No
amount of learning, no correctness of
deportment, no pre-eminence in the
domestic virtues can compensate for
Jack of liberality of sentiment towards
our felloWaaon and charity for their
1 peculiar convictions. He is gone to his
last account, and wo must leave him to
, be judged by a higher power than hu-
-4 nuu judgment and criticism. Ilisdoc-
r -i, trines will long survive him, we fear, in
:~4bt propagation of sectional hate, and
. . we trust that as in his iitcr years he
• bad withdrawn to a great extent from
public affidrs, his opportunities for calm
* “‘ reflection may have induced him to re
gret many of his harsh and vindictive
n ; r utterances towards tho people of the
* Southern States.

William Lloyd Garrison now lie
slowly. Hla great age make# It prob*
able that he will not recovnt'. VHe wsa
one of tho boldest and most uncom
promising of the early Abolitionists
and worked in Its cause with great
zeal and vigor. The first Abolition
paper published In this country was
published In Baltimore, In 1829, just
fifty years ago, and edited by Mr. Gar
rison and Mr. Lundy. Home of Garri
son’s attacks on slavery and the slave
market were so severe that bo was In
dicted and convicted of “ gross, mali
cious libel,” and sentenced to pay floe
and cost*. Being unable to pay the
costs he was committed to jail, where
be was Imprisoned forty-nine days,
until a merchant In York pal-1
hU floe and procured hte release. Be
next attempted to found an anti slave
ry Journal in Washington, but was un
successful. The Liberator, which he
Anally succeeded lb establishing In,
Boston, bad a weakly infancy. But
under all discouragements he persist
ed until the Abolition party carno iuto
power. His labors have long been
over and he Is willing to die. Few
men have lived to see a life purpose
more fully realized than he.

The people of tbe United States are
